Gilmore Girls (2000)

Chosen answer: Half sisters (or brothers) share either a mother or a father, but not both. Step sisters mean there is no blood relationship at all and one's mother and the other's father got married to each other.

Question: This applies more to the book: Buckbeak's appeal is set for two in the afternoon, and his execution at sundown. If the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures is so certain of Buckbeak's guilt, why (besides the gaping plot hole) do they wait so long between appeal and execution?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: The gap is to get all the formalities done. There was probably lots of paperwork to be done.

Ssiscool

Chosen answer: There is no way to be positive as Schumacher has never addressed this issue publicly. I can tell you that there are no common special effects make-up personnel between the two productions.

Question: Was the TV movie "Exiled" set in real time? I caught the last half hour of it on TV, and at one point, Logan makes a reference to an event from "three years ago"; the film was aired in 1998, and 1995 was Chris Noth's last season on the show.

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: Yes, it was set roughly three years after the incident that had Logan "exiled".

Die Hard (1988)

Question: When Karl is cutting the phone lines with the chainsaw, what is his brother yelling at him in German?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: He is shouting "No, no, I'm not finished here!" as presumably if the lines are cut before he's finished rerouting them (or whatever exactly he's doing) an alarm or similar will be tripped.

Casino Royale (2006)

Question: Near the end of the film, how does Bond deduce Vesper is in danger after she says she is needed by Mathis?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: He suddenly realises that he told Mathis about Le Chiffre's 'tell', and that that must be how Le Chiffre was able to beat him. With the realisation (or assumption - we never find out either way) that Mathis can't be trusted, he comes to the conclusion that Vesper could be in danger and goes after her. Of course, he fails to consider that he also told Vesper herself...

The Great Escape (1963)

Question: In the scenes in which the POWs use the bags inside their trousers to distribute tunnel dirt over the compound, how do they put the pins back into the bags? It seems like a pain in the butt to have to take the bags out, just to put them back in, just to take them back out, etc.

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: The movie is based on a true story and depicts actual events. After dispersing the dirt, the POWs simply removed the bags from their pants, reinserted the pins, and put the filled bags back inside their trousers again. Of course it was a pain, but what other options did they have? Little or none. Carrying out a secret operation in a POW camp with few resources, they worked with what they had, and made what they had work.

Question: Just before Michael shoots Sollozzo and McCluskey, what are Michael and Sollozzo saying to each other in Italian?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: Solozzo: (indicating Michael's broken jaw) I'm sorry. Michael: Are you serious? Solozzo: You must understand that what happened between me and your father was a business matter. I have great respect for your father, but your father is an old-fashioned man. He doesn't understand that I am a man of honor. Michael: Don't tell me these things. I know them. Solozzo: You know? You know, I have helped the Tattaglia family. I think, we can come to an agreement. I want peace. And let's stop all that nonsense. Michael: Do you want to play...um Solozzo: What? Michael: How do you say..? What I want, what is most important to me is that I have a guarantee.

Question: When Rick Masters is (quite literally) laundering his counterfeit bills, why does he put poker chips in the washing machine with the bills?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: The poker chips give the bills a more realistic texture by striking them while spinning, so they don't look newly made.

General questions

In screenwriting credits with more than one name, what is the difference between "and" and "&"?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: An ambersand (&) denotes that the people named wrote the script together, whereas the word AND denotes that the person named rewrote or added to the script. So "Screenplay by Tom & Dick and Harry" means that Tom and Dick wrote the screenplay and then Harry rewrote it.

Season 6 generally

Question: If Jack and Graem are brothers, why has there never been any mention of their relationship before, even in passing? And I'm talking beside the fact the producers didn't make them brothers until season 6.

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: There really wasn't any need for us to know he had a brother before - for all we know, he could have more than one brother but the need for us to know isn't there...just like there isn't any mention of his mother - who, for all we know, could be the mastermind criminal behind everything. Bear in mind over the near 10 years in the show's time that have elapsed over the 6 seasons, we've only spent 6 days in Jack's company - no reason his brother would have come up.

Chosen answer: Without talking to the producers, it's impossible to be sure, but it's possible he was gonna be killed off early, or only appear in a few episodes. As the show developed he developed into a more stable character and became a regular cast member.

Question: If Fred and George were thrown out of Dumbledore's Age Line for submitting their own names into the Goblet, shouldn't have Moody been thrown out for submitting Harry's?

Cubs Fan

Chosen answer: One, Moody was of age; so the age line would have had no effect whatsoever on him. Two, if "Moody" was able to fool the Goblet, a powerfully magical object, into announcing a fourth entrant into the Triwizard Tournament, it seems reasonable that he would be able to get past any protection Dumbledore may have put in place.
