Mattie kills Tom by shooting him with a rifle. She falls backwards into a pit and gets bitten by a rattlesnake. Her horse dies trying to get her to a doctor and they have to amputate her arm. Decades later, Mattie reveals her desire to never marry. Rooster passes away and she has his body moved to her family plot. She never hears from LaBoeuf again.

In the first shot of the dead man hanging form the tree, his head appears to be about 12" from the tree limb. After Mattie climbs up to cut him down, his head is several feet from the tree limb.
