Tangled

Question: How did the Stabbington brothers get Flynn to go on the boat, and steer it? It is shown that when he is at the place and the guards arrest him, he is sort of asleep.

Lily Harrison

Chosen answer: They surely clobbered him badly enough that he fell unconscious, and he didn't wake until the guards saw him. Also, they tied him up in the correct position and gave him a good push.

Question: In the scene of Mother Gothel stabbing Eugene, is it possible for him to die that fast from that wound?

Chosen answer: All she had to do was nick the right blood vessel, and he could have died much sooner. So, yes, it's possible for him to have died that fast. We have to assume the lack of blood was just Disney toning things down and not representative of the actual severity of the wound. If appearances counted for anything at all in the world of Disney, there'd be no such thing as a mortal wound.

Question: Since Maximus was the only one who went to gather the pub thugs in order to save Flynn from being hanged, I've got to ask two questions. 1) How were the thugs able to trust him? After all, when Maximus bursts into their pub after one of them helps Rapunzel and Flynn escape into the tunnel, they know he's the Captain's horse who was hunting them down. 2) How was Maximus able to communicate with the thugs so they would know what kind of situation Flynn was in?

Chosen answer: Maximus has a very expressive face, and is adept at some hand (hoof?) gestures. When he showed up he must have had such an insistent and desperate expression that they agreed to help. Perhaps the mime thug helped them to decode Maximus' pantomimed communications.

sfbiker1

Question: I have seen early concept art works of this movie. Was Maximus really supposed to be black, but had his color changed to white?

Chosen answer: Yes, he was. His color was changed either because of the castle being white, or simply because he looked strange.

Question: Tangled is promoted at Disney's 50th Animated Motion Picture. There is even a countdown of the 50 films on the blu-ray. But, they seem to be missing some movies from the list. I did not see Duck Tales the Movie (1990), A Goofy Movie (1995), An Extremely Goofy Movie (2000), Return to Neverland (2002), The Jungle Book 2 (2003), The Tigger Movie (2000), Piglet's Big Movie (2003), or Pooh's Heffalump Movie (2005). Now I know these weren't blockbusters, or timeless classics, but they were Disney, animated, and theatrical motion pictures. Why were they not on the list?

Chosen answer: I've actually found the answer to my own question. It seems that it is a matter of which a Disney sub-company actually produced those films. There are films promoted as "Disney" which are from "Disney Toon Studios." However, since these are not "Walt Disney Animation Studios" they are not on the list. A complete list of everything Disney can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Disney_theatrical_animated_features.

Question: I can't figure out how Rapunzel had the tiara to give back to Flynn in the boat scene, yet Mother Gothel found it in its hiding place after Rapunzel left the tower and gave it to the Stabbington brothers. Did I miss something important that explained this?

Chosen answer: After tempting the brothers with the tiara, she got them to join up with her and she had access to the tiara again. Then, when she met up with Rapunzel in the forest, she gave it to her and told her to see if Flynn would still stick around if she gave it back to him.

Question: Is it possible the king and queen could recognize Rapunzel as their long lost daughter, despite her short brown hair, when they knew she was born with long golden hair? If so, then how?

Chosen answer: It's entirely possible. Rapunzel had almost exactly the same facial features as her mother, and you could also count the family bond of simply knowing.

virtual-toast

Question: It's clear that when Rapunzel's hair is cut it turns brown, hence the incident when Flynn cuts it off. It's also clear that when Rapunzel is a baby only the piece of her hair, which Gothel cuts off, turns brown while the rest remains golden since its only a small piece. But what if Flynn didn't cut it off near her head? What would have happened if anyone only cut portions of her hair - including the tip or half of it?

Chosen answer: Once an individual strand is cut, at any point along its entire length, it turns brown completely and loses its power. The proximity to her head is not what caused her hair to turn all brown, it's the fact that Flynn cut *every* strand.

Question: Why does Gothel say "I'm not getting any younger down here" when Rapunzel is coming to pull her up? Does this imply that Rapunzel knows why Gothel keeps her in the tower, or is she pretending to be sarcastic?

Lily Harrison

Chosen answer: "I'm not getting any younger" is usually a sarcastic way of telling someone to hurry up.

Question: After the Stabbington Brothers escape the royal guards, they enter the same tunnel in the pub that Rapunzel and Flynn escape through. Here's what I don't get: Rapunzel and Flynn are high on a cliff when they come out of the tunnel at the dam and the Stabbington Brothers come out of another tunnel which leads them to the bottom of the dam. How come the Stabbington Brothers didn't end up in the same place as Rapunzel, Flynn, and the guards pursuing when exiting the tunnel? How did the twin thieves end up in another tunnel?

John Ohman

Chosen answer: There were two separate tunnels. The Stabbington brothers just came out of the other one. That's why they ended up in a different place.

Question: Rapunzel's hair is usually 70 feet long, but it was shorter when she was a child. So how long does her hair grow each year?

Chosen answer: If you divide the total length of hair by the age of Rapunzel, you get an average of about 4 feet of hair per year.

AJ Aneres

Question: During the number "I've Got A Dream," the thugs ask Flynn to share his dream, but Flynn refuses to tell them with the excuse "I don't sing." Is that line a reference to Flynn's voice actor or is that just an excuse Flynn is making?

John Ohman

Chosen answer: It's just Flynn.

Question: How does Gothel know Rapunzel's hair is magic before abducting her as an infant?

John Ohman

Chosen answer: She sings while she is breaking into the palace, and that has the same effect on Rapunzel's hair as it did on the flower.

Friso94

Question: How does a tear from Rapunzel revive Flynn? I though she could only cure with her hair.

CurtJay

Chosen answer: So did she, but apparently tears work too. The magic is in HER, after all. It just manifested most obviously in her hair, the parallel to the petals on the flower.

So then why did Mother Gothel die?

Answer: Because she used her hair to stay young and now her hair is gone.

Answer: Because she used the power from her hair and now her hair is gone. So she is as well.

Question: When the Stabbington Brothers climb out of the tunnel from the "Snuckling Duckling" Pub in the woods, one of them devises part of their plan of their revenge on Flynn by cutting himself off at the kingdom. How did they know Flynn was head to the kingdom with Rapunzel, even after fleeing from there when stealing the tiara? Since there's no explanation, this part of their quest would make no sense.

Chosen answer: I noticed that inconsistency too. I suppose that they would assume he will eventually go home, especially if there are no other kingdoms around and nowhere else to go.

Question: What does Flynn think will happen if he lets Rapunzel heal him? Why couldn't he wait till after he has healed to cut her hair?

Bob Smith

Chosen answer: Rapunzel had already promised Mother Gothel that she would stay in the tower with her if she let Rapunzel heal Flynn. Rapunzel also said earlier in the film that "When I promise something, I never, ever break that promise. EV-er!" So, since she already made a sacrificial and conditional promise to Gothel, she would not have broken it, so Flynn had to disable Rapunzel from healing him before she was stuck with Gothel for eternity.

She still would have disappeared if he cut Rapunzel's hair after.

Question: Judging by Maximus' appearance and the fact "Tangled" is set in Germany, is Maximus a Hanoverian or a different German breed?

Johman

Chosen answer: His breed has never been confirmed, but he does have enough similarities to a Hanoverian that it's possible that's what he is.

Question: What did Flynn mean when he said gesundheit after Rapunzel corrected him on her name and also, why does he call Pascal a frog?

Chosen answer: It is a common joke where one with a semi-difficult name, is responded with the term "gesundheit" as if they were sneezing. He calls Pascal a frog because he's not that bright, and does not know what he is. Both are used for comedic effect.

MasterOfAll

Answer: Flynn is a sarcastic character. When he hands Pascal to Rapunzel, he's being sarcastic and inconsiderate. He does not care about either of them (at first). His entire goal is to get the crown by helping Rapunzel so he is doing just that, nothing else matters.

Question: Why doesn't Rapunzel's hair grow after it's been cut? The brown chunk we see under her blonde hair is the same length it was when first cut.

Chosen answer: It is never explained why her hair didn't grow. One can assume when it lost it's power it also lost its life, meaning it couldn't grow anymore. Another valid option is that Rapunzel simply kept it short because it didn't match the rest of her hair.

Question: Why does Flynn say, "If you do this, you will die?" Why does he think Rapunzel will die if she heals him?

Answer: Because she will lose her freedoms being trapped in the tower. So essentially she will die.

Answer: I came to this forum specifically to find that out. Your answer totally makes sense, however him saying that was very distracting and at that moment you want to be caught up in the drama and not taken back by going " hey what was that about? what does he mean?" I think it's just poor judgment on the writer's part. But now I know...thanks.

Question: After Rapunzel locks an unconscious Flynn in her closet, Gothel returns home and Rapunzel tries to show her Flynn to prove her bravery and confidence. After Gothel screams at her, Rapunzel suddenly hesitates to open the closet door. What would have happened if Rapunzel actually opened the closet door and Gothel saw Flynn then?

Johman

Chosen answer: Gothel would have most likely killed Flynn.

Question: After Flynn decides to give his satchel to the Stabbington Brothers so they can give him a boost, how did he obtain the satchel when he was climbing them?

Chosen answer: We are not shown exactly how he gets the satchel back for comedic purposes. Presumably he just reached around and quickly grabbed it as he was climbing.

BaconIsMyBFF

Question: Why didn't Mother Gothel change Rapunzel's birthday when she was still young?

Chosen answer: Why would she? There was no motivation for her to do so.

Question: Why does a section of her hair not die forever after the witch cut it as a child while at the end of the movie all her hair is brown and short from being cut?

Chosen answer: That section that was cut when she was a baby is brown and shorter than the rest. She shows it to Flynn.

Phixius Premium member

Question: After Gothel discovers that Rapunzel has left the tower, how did she know to find her at the pub?

Chosen answer: I doubt she knew to look there specifically. She probably ended up there the same way they found it too. Just walking along the way to get to town, and there it was. Can't remember exactly what happened, but even if she said something along the lines of "I thought I would find you here" that doesn't mean she DID think that, just that she wanted to imply to Rapunzel that she was always one step ahead even if she wasn't.

Kimberly Mason

Question: Pascal comes down the tower with Rapunzel but where does he go?

Answer: You could assume that Pascal was attached to Rapunzel's hair during the whole scene/musical number, but since he's not visible it's likely that the animators didn't draw him into every shot to reduce costs, plus putting such a small 3D model on Rapunzel's shoulders/within her hair would have been very difficult and too time-consuming to animate.

Question: How did mother Gothel know the flower song?

Answer: Presumably she is the one who made up the song in the first place.

BaconIsMyBFF

Question: What is Eugene stabbed with in the movie, a piece of glass or a knife?

Trunks

Chosen answer: It's a long knife, or a medieval dagger called an athame. After she stabs him, she holds up the weapon, revealing what it is. Here's a screenshot of it: http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/villains/images/1/1b/Mother_Gothel_demonstrating_her_evil_power.png/revision/latest?cb=20131028164601.

Question: Once Gothel has given Rapunzel the satchel, how does she keep it hidden from Flynn/Eugene right up until the point at which they watch the lanterns from the boat?

Stewart Gordon

Chosen answer: Either in her hair, or under her dress.

MasterOfAll

Question: I have two questions in reference to Flynn and Gothel. 1) When Flynn is arrested, he believes Rapunzel has been abducted by the Stabbington Brothers. Later, while he is being taken to the gallows, Flynn sees the Stabbington Brothers in their cell and questions them on how they knew Rapunzel's hair is magic. One of them responds, "It wasn't us. It was the old lady," referring to Gothel. Seeing how he rides Maximus to the tower where Gothel hides Rapunzel after escaping, how did Flynn figure Rapunzel would be there without getting no information to confirm? 2) When Gothel stabs Flynn, why does she tell Rapunzel she's to blame for Flynn's impending death?

John Ohman

Chosen answer: 1) Flynn knows the tower is where Rapunzel and her "mother" live, going back there is the only logical place to search for Rapunzel. 2) She meant it was her fault for leaving the tower and dragging Flynn into the situation, which led him to his fate.

BaconIsMyBFF

Question: I have three questions about the Stabbington Brothers. 1) When the Stabbington Brothers find Flynn on the lake in the boat with Rapunzel, and then Flynn comes ashore to relinquish the tiara, the thieves have their own boat, which they eventually tie Flynn to and use to cast him off across the lake. Why don't the thieves just use their boat to try and catch Flynn and Rapunzel on the lake instead of waiting for them to come ashore? 2) After Gothel knocks the thieves unconscious, how did the Palace Guards find the Stabbington Brothers? 3) Seeing how the Stabbington Brothers shed tears of joy at Rapunzel and Flynn's wedding in "Tangled Ever After," what matter persuaded them to perceive Rapunzel and Flynn more favorably and made them decide to turn over as new leaves?

John Ohman

Chosen answer: 1. They had to lure Flynn away into a trap as to retrieve Rapunzel easier. 2. Probably a routine patrol. 3. Considering they are not imprisoned, and alive and well, Rapunzel probably pardoned them on the catch that they be good.

MasterOfAll

Question: While Rapunzel realizes she is the lost princess and figures Mother Gothel's lies, how did she even know Flynn never betrayed her?

Chosen answer: Mother Gothel said: Where will you go? He won't be there for you. Then Rapunzel said: What did you do to him? So I assume she found out at that time she said that.

Question: One of the thugs helps Rapunzel and Flynn escape by showing them the passage that starts from their pub. The Stabbington Brothers - who escape the clutches of the guards - follow them in. Later when the red-headed theives meet Mother Gothel in the forest, they exit through a secret door in a tree trunk with the same "Subbling Ducking" symbol on the secret door at the pub; that's where Mothel Gothel waited and expected to meet Rapunzel and Flynn after threatening one of the thugs to tell her where it was. Strangely, however, Rapunzel and Flynn end up at the dam that appears to be the dead of the tunnel, while the Stabbington Brothers brust out of another tunnel below them. If the forest was where the other end of the tunnel was located, then why didn't Rapunzel and Flynn end up there? How come the Stabbington Brothers came out from another tunnel, and how on earth did they find their way to the other end of the tunnel where Gothel was waiting?

Chosen answer: When the dam breaks, Rapunzel and Flynn run for cover and subsequently get trapped in a cave that was not originally part of the secret tunnel. The Stabbington Brothers get washed away by the water, and are implied to have found the real exit of the tunnel once the tide died down. Gothel went to the same exit because that is the legitimate exit of the tunnel, and the only one the drunk viking would've known about, especially since Rapunzel and Flynn only escaped the cave out of pure luck.

Question: If there are a couple of scenes where Pascal, the chameleon, changed colors not to blend with objects but only due to his emotions. Is it possible for a real chameleon to do, or is it something only Pascal can do? In other words, is it something a chameleon can do only in a cartoon?

Chosen answer: The ability of a number of chameleon species to change colours is generally used a form of social signalling - it's a common misconception that they shift colour in order to blend in with their surroundings. Although some species of chameleon have displayed the ability to use their colour changes as a primitive form of camouflage, most only change in response to social situations or changes in their physical or emotional state. So, yes, it's very possible that Pascal could change colour due to his emotions, in fact, it's really the norm.

Question: If Mothel Gothel could fly at the beginning of the film, even if her age was alternating, then why doesn't she use that magic ability of hers throughout the rest of film? It's obvious why she couldn't reveal her powers to Rapunzel, but why didn't she even fly at other times when Rapunzel wasn't in her presence, including the scene when she realizes Rapunzel is no longer in the tower? Since the lack of Rapunzel's answer indicated to Gothel she was gone, couldn't she have flown up to the top of the tower to check through the window, instead of having to climb the stairs?

Chosen answer: She didn't know for a fact that Rapunzel wasn't in the tower until she investigated for herself, hence why she went to the trouble of pulling the rubble from the hidden doorway and entering through the floor. What if Rapunzel was simply asleep or injured, if she flew up to the window and Rapunzel saw her, she'd have lots of awkward questions to answer, and she has jealously guarded Rapunzel to stay young for nearly 20 years, she's not going to risk a mistake.

Just before Flynn cuts off Rapunzel's hair, there is a shot from behind him and he reaches up with his right hand to push her hair behind her ear. His arm is visible up to his forearm and the shackle is nowhere in sight. However, in the next, wide shot, the shackle is suddenly up around his wrist.

Trivia

All of the creatures in baby Rapunzel's mobile are referenced later in the movie. The blue bird is the first creature she encounters after leaving the tower (it flies around her head when she sings "completely free"). There is also a white horse (Maximus), a chameleon (Pascal), a yellow duck (The Snuggly Duckling), and a cherub (the old man who dresses like an angel in "I've got a Dream").
