Plot hole: In order for the treasure trail to be followed both desks would need to have existed in 1865 when the code was deciphered. However HMS Resolute wasn't broken up and made into desks until 1879.

Ben Gates: Before the Civil War, the states were all separate. People used to say "the United States are..." It wasn't until the war ended that people started saying "the United States is..." Under Lincoln, we became one nation.

Answer: It is never explained what was on the page. It was just a cliffhanger to set up for a 3rd movie, I think.
