War of the Worlds

Other mistake: When Ray pulls up to Mary Ann's home, the front exterior layout and dimensions of the house are evident, from its near center front door to the two car garage, in front of Ray's van. The side exterior wall contains two large garage doors, which are about 35-40 ft from the location of the front door, with no small basement windows at ground level; inside, beside the front door, the stairs that lead to the basement run parallel just under the stairs in the foyer. In the basement, the small windows on the far end of the furnace room they run into are only about 20 ft from the basement stairs. Not only are the small windows non-existent in the exterior shot, but it's entirely impossible for two small windows to be where they are, considering the exterior footage of the house. Other mistake: During the ferry scene, after Ray watches above at the aliens, there's an aerial view of the harbour and afterwards a shot of a crowd staring at the sky. Watch for a man on the right with a red hat taking a quick peek at the camera in front.

Sacha

Other mistake: In the scene where the aliens appear to throw the Bayonne Bridge off its pylons and the eighteen-wheeler crashes on top of the apartments, look closely on the far right. There is a red car, and right above it is a round black object above the hedge. As the scene continues, it starts to fade away into the red house behind it.

Other mistake: When Dakota Fanning and Tom Cruise are in the house being searched by the alien probe, they use a mirror to shield themselves. We can see a diverging beam of light coming off of the probe, and therefore we should be able to see a related beam coming off of the mirror, widening even further. No second beam is visible.

Other mistake: Mary Ann and Tim's basement, and Ogilvy's cellar are the same set, just dressed differently; note the positioning of the windows, the stairs, even the little room off to the side. Also, some items in both the basement and cellar are the same, for instance the chair. While they are in the basement and the plane is crashing, before they run into the side room, Ray grabs his gun off of that chair and later in the movie when they are in Ogilvy's basement, Rachel is in that chair when the aliens are in the cellar.

Other mistake: When they arrive at the ferry port the crowd try to steal the car and it all turns violent, as if no one's seen a car for a while, but when they arrive on foot at the ferry there are several cars already on it, and no one bats an eyelid. The cars at some point must have driven through the crowd with no problems. Also the cars are taking up much needed space on the ferry.

Suggested correction: The cars could have been on the ferry before the crowd arrived. Or at least have been standing at the front when the ferry arrived. Besides, the fight over the car is for people not going onto the ferry obviously, but going somewhere else.

lionhead

Continuity mistake: When the ferry casts off in the wideshot, there are only six people hanging off the outer edge of the ramp as it's being raised. When Robbie and another gentleman help these people over, in the close-up one of them wears tan pants, a long blue coat and knit hat, but this person was not amongst the six in the previous shot. Trivia: In an early scene in which Rachel is watching television, she's channel surfing. At one point, she hits briefly upon a shot of a car being demolished by a speeding locomotive. This is, in fact, a scene from "The Greatest Show on Earth," which Steven Spielberg has reported as the first movie he ever saw at a movie theater.

Question: Several other answers and corrections state that the reddish liquid sprayed by the tripods was what essentially grew the red vines. However I thought I heard someone in the film say something along the lines of "using us (i.e. blood) as fertiliser". Can someone please clarify?

Answer: Since the tripods tended to spray the red fluid shortly after pulling a human into themselves, it seems a good assumption that the red fluid is essentially blood. Given this, it seems likely that the "spore" of the vines is spread in the red fluid.
