Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story

Corrected entry: At the beginning, Gordon confronts Peter and shows him the OSQ magazine and says he got addicted to it in high school. Later on, during the Dodgeball opening credits, the commentator says, "Bringing you sports since 1999, the OSQ". Considering his age, how could Gordon have gotten addicted to it in high school?

Correction: The commentator was talking about the TV station, not the magazine. Additionally, he says that he started reading the magazine in college, not in high school.

Corrected entry: During the matches in Las Vegas, there are announcers from "ESPN8". In the earlier matches, you notice the two people sitting behind these announcers. In the later matches, which were no doubt on separate days because of other plot happenings, the same two people are sitting behind the announcers in the same clothes they wore earlier on.

Correction: They could have tournament passes which give them the same seats each day and only have one outfit, extremely plausible. It is not a long event.

Corrected entry: At the beginning of the film, we see a commercial for Globo gym on the TV watched by Peter La Fleur - In it, Globo gym owner White Goodman states "this is me, six years ago." The picture we see is dated in 1987, which sets the film in 1993. Next in the scene, Peter then checks his answer phone messages, and on it is a message from the video shop, claiming his DVD rental for "Mona Lisa Smile" is overdue. "Mona Lisa Smile" wasn't made until 2003. And DVDs weren't available for sale or for rental until 1997.

Correction: Just because you see a commercial on TV doesn't mean it's a new commercial. It's not uncommon for small companies to use the same commercial year after year after year.

Myridon

Corrected entry: In one scene in the movie Ben Stiller goes to get a tan and says to turn it up because he wants to burn. Well he may have gotten a tan, but in the rest of the movie he is not tanned or even a different color.

Correction: We don't know if he did actually stay in the tanning bed long enough to get a tan or not - it's quite possible that straight after that scene he had to leave for some reason.

Corrected entry: Peter checks his phone messages in the morning. There is one from the video shop saying he has five overdue DVD's, but then only three DVD titles are read out.

Correction: The phone says "the following DVDs", and then reads out the 3 titles.

Corrected entry: Las Vegas is one of the most eccentric cities in the country so I highly doubt Steve the Pirate would've gotten picked on for looking like a freak. In fact, people who saw him on the street would have assumed he was an employee of the pirate-themed casino Treasure Island.

Correction: While this explanation of Las Vegas eccentricity may be plausible, the guys that pick on Steve the Pirate actually tell him to "go back to Treasure Island" as they drive past. It cannot be considered a plot hole because of the general way people in Las Vegas act, because the guys that picked on him could've been from anywhere else in the country and in fact laughed at him because he looked like a Treasure Island employee.

Corrected entry: Towards the beginning of the movie, the Average Joes plays a qualifying match against a Girl Scout squad. Since when are girl scouts allowed to play dodge ball, go to Las Vegas, compete against full grown men and possibly win a $50,000 cash prize? Also, parents would have to object due to the possibility of one of their daughters coming to serious harm.

Correction: Why wouldn't the girl scouts be allowed to participate in the tournament. If the players have their parent's permission and meet the requirements they would be allowed to compete. Its a tournament based on "skill" not a game of chance. Bowling for instance has various tournaments that all ages and teams compete in.

Corrected entry: The Average Joe's played against Girl Scouts to qualify. The uniforms the Girl Scouts wear look nothing like actual American Girl Scout uniforms.

Correction: They do look fairly similar, and they did not state that those were the uniforms that they wore to troop meetings. They could have possibly made similar looking uniforms that were easier to get around in, in order to play without ruining their own scout uniforms.

Corrected entry: In the first Dodgeball game, Peter La Fleur does not get out first however when his teammate catches a ball, he came back in the game before anyone else. According to Dodgeball rules, if a ball is caught, the person who got out first begins playing again.

Josh Appelbaum

Correction: According to the rules of dodgeball by the IDBF, a player returning is an OPTION. In the movie it never states that the first player must return, it only indicates that A PLAYER may return to play. In dodgeball, headshots are not allowed and in the event of a headshot the player is not removed from the game but as we see in the movie this is not the case.

Serrabowler

Corrected entry: In the scene where Me'Shell catches the ball thrown by Peter someone screams out "Vince Vaughn," which is the name of the actor who played him.

Correction: Actually, the announcer shouts, "It's caught" and not, "Vince Vaughn."

Corrected entry: Nowhere in Las Vegas can you bet on a game in which you are playing, as Peter La Fleur did for the final game of the tournament. The picture of White Goodman at the beginning of the movie (I believe) is dated 1978. Since he looks like a young adult in the picture that would make him in his mid-forties in the movie, which he sure doesn't look like (Ben Stiller, who played White was only 37 when the movie was filmed). In the final game, White is disqualified for stepping over the line, but his hit on Peter still counts. Previously a character was disqualified for simply stepping over the line (making White's hit invalid).

Correction: Peter could have bet on the game before he went back to the team, or could have had someone else place the bet for him. White could have been in his 40's. (Brad Pitt is 40, did you see Troy??) The final game, Peter was hit before White stepped on the line, hence a double fault and 'overtime'.

Corrected entry: At the dodgeball tournament the announcer says the winning team gets $50,000 in "cold hard cash," but when the Average Joes win they get a huge check.

Correction: This is standard practice for all awards, it's much easier and showier for presentation to show the big check than a pile of bills. Also, many people would consider a check as cash especially in a game winnings type format - cash as opposed to cash and prizes, just prizes like $50,000 in Rice-a-roni, etc.

Corrected entry: During the film we see that the cheerleaders and Average Joes are staying at the Monte Carlo - the male cheerleader wants to ride the roller coaster - yet there is no roller coaster at the Monte Carlo.

Correction: He does not say he is going to ride a roller coaster at the Monte Carlo, he just says he wants to go ride the roller coaster, and he could be going anywhere.

Corrected entry: When the announcer announces "Oh my, Globo Gym wins" nothing happens. When the announcer announces that "The winner is Average Joe's" confetti falls from the roof. Why didn't it fall when Globo Gym supposedly won? Usually someone would have triggered the confetti once the winner was announced. (01:19:05)

thetaz00

Correction: This is a question, not a mistake. The answer is it only appeared that Globo Gym had won. The official had to confirm it. The confetti doesn't fall when the announcer declares a winner.

Corrected entry: During the first game against the Germans, Peter launches a ball and misses a player that ducks but the ball hits a bald player in the leg behind him. That player should have been out. (00:49:50)

Toolio

Correction: Yes, he probably should have been, but the ref didn't see it. Bad calls happen in sports all the time.

wizard_of_gore

Corrected entry: In the scene when the Average Joes play against the Girl Scouts, the girl Peter hits should have been out, but the referee didn't say anything.

Correction: The ref missed it. A lot of games have missed or incorrect calls by refs.

Correction: Quite possibly the ref didn't see it, so didn't call it. There have been critical games won and lost due to a referee's missed call.

Corrected entry: In the 1938 Uberamerica dodge ball film clip, the American flag that appears briefly in the background has offset rows of stars (like the current flag with 50 stars for 50 states). In 1938, there were 48 states and they are represented by 6 rows of 8 stars that are flush aligned.

Correction: Uber-American Films was created in 1938, i.e. a parody of Nazi propaganda, but this particular video was copyrighted in the 1950's, when all 50 states had already joined the union (the film itself is a parody of the "education films" released by the US government during the '50's).

Corrected entry: The one girl scout hits peter in the head with a dodgeball for revenge but when he got hit, all he did was move his head and didn't move back or anything.

Correction: If you got hit by a dodgeball thrown by an 11-year-old girl scout, would you have to recover from it? Maybe she didn't throw it very hard. That's not a mistake in the film.

Corrected entry: No bookie would allow a member of the sporting event himself to make a bet on the game, because of the fact that the player has the ability to determine the results. (01:23:55)

Correction: How would the bookie know that he was on the Dodgeball team?

Rlvlk

Continuity mistake: When the guys are all sitting around (after the car wash) they are throwing ideas to save the gym. In one shot Gordon pulls his magazine out of his bag, but a split second later in a closer shot he pulls the magazine out again. (00:15:15)

Cotton McKnight: I'm being told that Average Joe's does not have enough players and will be forfeiting the championship match.
Pepper Brooks: It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for 'em.

Question: What is the significance of the third judge being Chuck Norris? The thing is that everybody in the theater laughed when it showed it and he gave the thumbs up, I'm just wondering what it's all about.

Answer: There were many celebrity cameos throughout the film. It's just kind of strange that Chuck Norris would do this.
