Continuity mistake: When Selena is leaving on the ferry near the end, and Detective John Mackey pulls up and watches her drifting away, as he gets out of the car the windsheild wipers stop moving. In the next behind shot of him standing at the dock edge, watching, they are back on again.
Factual error: In one scene, we Dolores driving back home, after the scene where Vera tells her that accidents can 'happen' to wives husbands every day. The shot shows a huge full moon in the sky. Everyone who has every learnt any science/astronomy should know that a huge full moon cannot occur the night before a solar eclipse.
Continuity mistake: When it shows the closeup of the cabbage in the pot, boiling over, there is a handle on the pot, sticking up in the air on the front side of the pot. There is also liquid pourng out of the pot, staining the side of the pot. In the next shot, the handle has gone, and the liquid which poured over, down the side of the pot, has gone, and the pot is now clean.
Continuity mistake: When Joe is saying "fat ass, lousy cooking.." about Dolores, Dolores finally gathers enough courage to stand up to him, and she smashes the ceramic pitcher of cream into his head. After she does this, the pattern and position of the cream running down the back of the chair and the amount of cream on Joe's head changes between shots.
Continuity mistake: When Dolores and Selena are having their first meal at the old house, in a back shot we see Selena pour herself a drink, take a sip, then place it down and then proceed to smoke her cigarette. Then when it cuts to a front shot Selena now has her glass back in her hand and is drinking, then she puts it down again. In these same two shots the layout of the items on the table - the wine bottle, cigarette pack, ashtray etc., all differs.
Continuity mistake: Just before Dolores smashes the window, using the axe, the shape of the hole in the window changes considerably between shots. Also, as Dolores smashes the window with the axe, she is about the hit the top of the window, yet in the next shot she smashes from the bottom of the window. It is also apparent, as the glass smashes in slow motion, that Dolores' reflection is painted on.
Continuity mistake: When we see Dolores enter the kitchen, to find a untensil to kill Vera with, keep an eye on the items on the counter to the right of the door she walks through. Later, when Dolores grabs the rolling pin, the position of the items and some of the actual items themselves have changed.
Continuity mistake: When Joe takes the soda from the fridge, Dolores finishes cutting her cabbage and picks up a bowl from beside it and walks over to the stove. When she had finished cutting the cabbage, there is cut cabbage on the board. When we see the board again there's no cut cabbage, and the cabbage halves differ their position greatly and also the knife Dolores puts down on the cutting board is a totally different utensil in the second shot.
Audio problem: In the shots of Detective John Mackey standing by the window looking out of the blinds at Selena, while he's on the telephone, as he speaks, nothing that we hear matches up with the movements of the side of his mouth. It is very clearly out of sync, and audio is heard when the mouth is still.
Other mistake: While Joe is hanging onto a piece of wood, to stop himself from falling into the very deep disused empty well, the eclipse across the sun goes back and forth and back and forth and Dolores looks straight at the sun, which she wouldn't be able to do for more than a second.
Continuity mistake: On the last day, Selena leaves via the car ferry, after listening to her mother's tape, and Detective Mackey turns up to watch her leave while Vera's hearing is happening; Detective Mackey, the Magistrate and John are all sitting around, discussing Vera's death and Detective Mackey's report when Selena bursts in to save her mother, meaning Mackey is in two places at the same time.
