Boyz n the Hood

Question: When Ricky's mum is looking at his test results, I think his score was 710. I don't live in America, so I have no idea if this is good or not. I'm assuming it is, but if someone could confirm this and just how good (e.g. very high or simply quite good) it is, I would appreciate it.

Answer: The scoring has been changed in recent years, but for the time that is a very poor SAT score, the average was probably between 900 and 1000, and 1600 was perfect. But at the time, you needed to score at least a 700 on the SAT to get into college, so he would have been able to go to school on a football scholarship, had he not been killed.

Question: What exactly did Darrin and Chris steal and how did they get caught? Also, why was their sentence seven years and how did Chris end up in a wheelchair?

4

Answer: It was never said what they stole, just that they were going to go to the store (probably a corner store or convenience store) and they probably stole food. They got caught because they were just kids and not good at stealing or being sneaky. However, they didn't get a 7-year sentence for the theft. It's just that the film jumps to 7 years later and Darrin is now a gang member who has been in and out of jail the whole time. He's just celebrating his release from prison for a different, unknown crime. Chris is in a wheelchair due to a gun shot wound, though it's not stated how or who shot him.

Ricky says they got caught stealing when Tre asks what happened.

Question: At Darrin's home from prison party, he tells one of his friends, "I can read, I ain't no criminal." How are the two related?

1

Answer: The majority of people who commit small crimes, or even some major ones, are people that drop out of schools, and are mostly or completely illiterate. This is especially true in larger cities and people from a poor neighborhood.

5

Answer: Prisons are built on third grade reading scores. They feel if you can't read by the time you reach the third grade you will commit crimes and go to jail. Most prisoners are illiterate.

Question: In the 1984 part of the movie the older boys who stole young Ricky's football who was the boy with the bandana that the camera focused on. It seemed that he would be important in the story later the way the camera stopped and slowly revealed his face when he caught the ball.

1

Answer: The character is Mad Dog, played by Lexie Bigham. He was the one that gave the ball back to the boys. I haven't seen the film in a long time and don't recall if he hangs out with Doughboy in the present.

Answer: It symbolizes that he used to be a football player just like Rick wanted to be at that age. But probably due to the cards he was dealt he gave up on that dream. When they emphasize the man in the feel its like showing empathy to the kids because he sees himself in Ricky, thus giving the ball back.

Question: Who's the guy with the pacifier in his mouth all the time and why does he need one?

Answer: His name is Dooky, he's one of the friends of the main characters. Around the time this film was created, sucking pacifiers was somewhat popular amongst black youths in the United States. Several prominent hip-hop artists were seen doing so and in turn, many of their young fans emulated them. There was a belief that the trend started as a way to surreptitiously consume drugs such as LSD through the pacifier but this seems more myth than actual fact.
