The Good Girl

Question: When Phil and Justine talk about her being pregnant, she wonders if anything is "really" going to change. He asks what she means, and the scene ends. What did she mean?

Question: How come Justine never tells Phil, apparently, about Bubba blackmailing her to have sex with him? Phil found out that she had an affair anyway, so Bubba can no longer threaten her.

Answer: I think she wanted to put the whole situation behind her. When Phil asked if she cheated with the security guard from work, she let him believe it. She was able to convince him that the baby was definitely his, not the guard's. Telling him about Bubba would only make the situation worse. Also, Bubba had seen her with Holden, so he could try and convince Phil that she was lying about the security guard. It would create a bigger mess. She decided to accept her life as it was.

Question: When Bubba told Justine about the bill for the motel, why did he think she would tell Phil about them? They were never at the motel.

Answer: Bubba was afraid that if Phil confronted Justine about the hotel bill that, not only would she confess about her affair with Holden, but that she might also tell Phil about what happened with Bubba.

Question: Is there any significance to Justine looking almost the same - wearing a jacket over jeans, with her hair tied back - for much of the movie?

Answer: I would say her similar clothing style represents that although she wanted her life to change, it never did, and she ultimately remained stuck in her never-ending routine, always looking the same, never moving forward in a new direction.

Question: It seems to be made clear that Holden is the father of the baby, since there were issues with Phil's sperm. However, Justine had sex with Bubba as well. What about the possibility of him being the father?

Answer: I think you answered your own question. The only certainty is that Phil is NOT the father because of fertility issues, though he apparently deludes himself into believing that he has somehow gotten Justine pregnant.

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Justine's husband needs 'help' at the doctor's office, Justine is wearing a flannel shirt and overalls. Then, when she's back at work, she's suddenly wearing a multicolored sweater briefly for one scene (which is what she wears two days later during the day she talks to Holden's parents), then at the end of the day she's suddenly wearing the same flannel shirt and overalls. Trivia: When Justine asks Phil where he was that afternoon - hoping that he didn't see her and Holden at the hotel - he says, "painting on Bovary." The novel "Madame Bovary" is about a married woman who has affairs, like Justine.
