Brandon Teena, a transgendered female-to-male (FTM), was born Teena Brandon. When he is forced to leave town after committing a crime, he winds up in Nebraska, where he meets and befriends Candace, a single mother. Candace introduces Brandon to Lana and her group of juvenile friends; he is charismatic and fresh-faced, and townsfolk grow enamoured with him, not knowing about the secret he harbours. Young and foolhardy, Brandon acts recklessly despite the dangers of his biological identity being discovered. Llana and Brandon fall in love, as one of Llana's guy friends, becomes suspicious of Brandon and who "he" really is. This movie is based on a true story.
Lana: I hate my life.
Brandon: I hate your life, too.
Trivia: Though most of the characters depicted existed, there was another young lady, Mich, who, at the time, was Lana's good friend. She also knew Brandon. However, in the events following the tragedy, Mich moved out of Nebraska to avoid the attention.
