Continuity mistake: The first time the book-writing couple entered the master bedroom, there are two Barbie-like heads in the TV, side by side. The next time it shows them in there, there are three heads in the TV.
A group of tourists are found ritualistically murdered in the woods, and the sheriff suspects Jeff. Erica, who had disappeared earlier, is found dead in a closet. The group finds a video of themselves engaged in what appears to be a satanic ritual, where it is revealed that Tristen may be the witch. She threatens the other tourists, and then hangs herself. We later see the group having been arrested for Tristen and Erica's murders, as well as the group in the woods. We learn that the mix of Blair Witch hysteria and the amount of drugs consumed by the group the night before led them to go crazy and kill the tourists in the woods the same way the people at Coffin Rock were killed. We also see in some security tapes that Kim murdered the rude convenience store clerk, and that Tristan didn't hang herself; the group pushed her off the balcony, accusing her of being the witch. The tape shows Tristan begging for her life before they hang her.
Jeff: We're all virgins on this bus.
Trivia: This movie is the first feature film directed by famed documentary director Joe Berlinger. His original director's cut of the film was much more ambiguous and less reliant on traditional Hollywood-style horror sequences. However, the studio forced him to reshoot several key sequences, add in new scenes and drastically re-edit the film to make it more marketable to mainstream audiences. Berlinger dislikes the version of the film released in theaters, and didn't direct another feature - film until Netflix's "Extremely Wicked, Shocking Evil and Vile," which was released almost 20 years later in 2019. (Though he continued to work as a documentary director in the meantime).
Question: On the DVD (UK, not sure about anywhere else) there is a feature called 'the secret of esrever', which tells you to look for very subliminal hidden images in the film - I have looked so many times and there is still one I can't find - does anyone know where the 'water' one is? The only thing I can see is what looks like an owl's head made out of the trees in the scene where the woman is drowning a baby in the lake. If this is it how does it relate to the film? Also is there a message in the images? There are a few words but I can't make a sentence out of them.
