Trivia: When the group of neighbors goes into Gale Gordon's house there is a picture of Gale and Lucille Ball on the TV. Gale played Mr Moonie on the Here's Lucy and Lucy Shows.
Trivia: In one scene, Tom Hanks' character is watching Mister Rogers' Neighborhood on TV. Thirty years later, Tom Hanks would go on to portray Fred Rogers in the film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

Answer: It's unlikely he could have survived in real life, or if he did, he'd be far more injured and/or permanently maimed, but this is a comedy movie, and reality is often ignored.
