A recounting of the story of how Christian sensation musical band MercyMe created their smash hit breakout single, I Can Only Imagine. Following a young Bart Millard in childhood through high school with an abusive father, a run-away mother, and various bumps in the road along the way. Leading to the redemption of his father, the reunion of Bart with his girlfriend and soon to be wife. All combination to his inspirations of writing the song, and how it was almost given to Amy Grant as her single before she realized how impactful it would be.

Trivia: In one of the scenes set in 1985, Bart rides his bike by a movie theater that's advertising it's showing Goonies and Jaws 3D. Dennis Quaid, who plays Bart's father in this film, also played the lead role of Mike Brody in Jaws 3D in 1983.
