Boyhood (2014)

Ending / spoiler

(5 votes)

Liv is selling the house and moving to an apartment. She won't need as much space now that Mason is leaving for college, plus she doesn't need the higher expenses of maintaining a house. Mason drives to the University, moves into a dorm, and meets his roommate Dalton. Dalton immediately appears to be an easy-going, sociable, helpful, and fun type of person. Mason also meets Dalton's girlfriend Barbara and her roommate Nicole within minutes of his arrival. Mason is invited to go along with them on their hike - and deliberately miss the stupid orientation. Before they leave the dorm room, Mason is offered - and readily accepts - a laced brownie. Dalton and Barbara pair off on their own, leaving Mason with Nicole. Mason uses his father's advice/ techniques about how to be ahead of the other guys when meeting and talking to girls. They carry on a conversation and Mason is smiling - his relationship with Nicole is already taking off, and Mason finally sees a bright (er) future. [Then again, the "brownie effect" may be playing a role in Mason's sudden elation.].

Continuity mistake: When Mason is out with his friends and they are throwing blades at the wooden cut out, Mason throws a blade, than it cuts to his other friend, than it cuts back to the wooden cut out and the blade Mason threw suddenly disappears.

Mason: So what's the point?
Dad: Of what?
Mason: I don't know, any of this. Everything.
Dad: Everything? What's the point? I mean, I sure as shit don't know. Neither does anybody else, okay? We're all just winging it, you know? The good news is you're feeling stuff. And you've got to hold on to that.

More quotes from Boyhood

Trivia: After posting Obama signs in yards, Mason Sr got into his car and told Mason and Samantha, "Look, I'm a patriot, all right?" He drives away but the camera stays fixed on the now-visible Jeep parked on the opposite side of the street. This appears to be showing another kind of "Patriot" [Jeep Patriot], but it is actually a Liberty. (01:02:59)
