Professional photographer L.B. "Jeff" Jeffries (Stewart) breaks his leg while getting an action shot at an auto race. Confined to his New York apartment, he spends his time looking out of the rear window observing the neighbours. He begins to suspect that the man opposite may have murdered his wife. Jeff enlists the help of his society model girlfriend Lisa Freemont (Kelly) and his nurse Stella (Ritter) to help him investigate.
Lisa: The last thing Mrs. Thorwald would leave behind would be her wedding ring. Stella, do you ever leave yours at home? Stella: The only way somebody would get that would be to chop off my - finger. Let's go down to the garden and find out what's buried there. Lisa: Why not? I always wanted to meet Mrs. Thorwald.
Trivia: If you look closely in one of the shots looking at the musician's pad you can see Hitchcock making a cameo like he does in all his movies. If you pay attention however, you might notice that this is a reenactment of a scene from one of his other movies, 'Rope.' Also, Hitchcock is standing in for James Stewart and the character he played in 'Rope' since Mr. Stewart is busy spying on this scene.(00:26:15)
