Question: What are the nuns doing to Marie de Tourvel when she is sick? What possible benefit did they feel it would have?

ChiChi

Chosen answer: It looked to me like they were performing what is known as "cupping". "Cupping" is a branch of Chinese medicine where a cup (often heated, the so-called "fire cupping") is used to create a vacuum on certain areas of the skin, to simulate acupressure. It is said to relieve respiratory problems and muscular pains ad to stimulate the flow of life energy in the patient. How these French nuns came to know of and approve of the technique is another matter..

Cold Mountain (2003)

Question: Why does Bosie's (blonde Home Guard) nose bleed whenever there's shooting going on? It happens when he's at the Swanger's house and shoots the sons and again at the end when there's the big shootout with Inman.

ChiChi

Chosen answer: Bosie is an Albino. One of the symtoms of Albinism (but only a very rare type) is unsusal bleeding which might include frequent nose bleeds. Gunfights clearly bring these on in him.

Must've been what kept him out of the army, I was wondering.

Matchstick Men (2003)

Question: How can Roy possibly be a smoker? He has OCD and is constantly cleaning the smallest of messes. The ashtray in his car was overflowing with butts.

ChiChi

Chosen answer: OCD isn't about cleanliness, it's about obsession and compulsion (hence the name). Cleaning could be a compulsion in this case, though smoking could be as well (and probably is, with the amount of butts in the ashtray). If that's the case then the cleaning probably wouldn't apply to the ashtray, since all he'd be doing is smoking and cleaning it, which would limit his actions even further. It's a bit more complicated than that, but that's the basics.

Flatliners (1990)

Question: When David drives up to see Winnie to apologize for his childhood behaviour, he drives up to the house through what looks like the woods. Does anyone know that area of IL (Bensonville) and why there would be no formal road leading to Winnie's house?

ChiChi

Chosen answer: I don't know the area, but there is nothing unusual about a dirt road leading to a house, both my wife's parents and her brother have a long dirt road that leads to the house from a major road. It's common as the city or county doesn't usually have the budget to pave/maintain roads out past the city limits.

The Mummy (1999)

Question: No matter how many times I watch this, I don't count all 10 plagues. Do some end up on the cutting room floor?

ChiChi

Answer: The featured Plagues are: locusts, flies, water turning into blood, fiery hail, the sun turning black, boils and sores. The missing Plagues are: cattle disease, wild beasts, frogs, and death of the first-born sons.

Chosen answer: The plagues stop when they 'destroy' the mummy's powers. The good guys are trying to stop the mummy before the death of the first-born plauge (which they suceed in doing, as Jonathan survives the movie), as well as preventing the mummy from becoming all powerful and impossible to destroy - which would happen after the tenth plague. Some of the plagues, too, could have been happening while the good guys are in Hamunaptra and therefore not experiencing them themselves, bringing the total of plagues experienced by the outside world closer to nine.
