Other mistake: When the expert is testifying about the analysis of the tire residue, he says he used a "dual column gas chromatograph with flame analyzation detector." It should have been "flame ionization detector."

Character mistake: Lisa is testifying about the 1963 Pontiac Tempest and the 1964 Buick Skylark being the same height, width, and wheelbase. While the Tempest and Skylark shared the same components, the 1963 and 1964 models were quite different from each other. The 1964 Skylark and Tempest moved to a 115 inch wheelbase and a larger body and frame. The 1963 Skylark and Tempest were smaller with a 112 inch wheelbase. An expert as she claims to be wouldn't confuse the two.

Continuity mistake: When the Judge asks Vinny if his clients are guilty or not guilty, he does not have his fingers on his cheeks. Then in the next shot of Vinny answering the question, we see the Judge has his fingers on his cheeks. But when the shot goes back to the Judge telling Vinny that he doesn't understand the question, the fingers are not on his cheeks anymore.

Continuity mistake: When Vinny walks into the Judge's chambers (where the Judge tells him there's no record of him trying a case), the Judge is raising his hand with the cigarette up, in the next shot, it's back down.

Plot hole: While we never see Lisa leave the courtroom at the end to call Judge Malloy to send the fax verifying Jerry Callo, it is possible she snuck away for a minute to do it after the dismissal and before they leave the town. However, Vinnie does not ever seem to mention that he told the judge he is Callo to her so how did she know? He must have mentioned it to her while they were rushing to leave, they were back on speaking terms and she called Malloy.

Continuity mistake: When Vinnie is sentenced to contempt of court for the first time, the camera focuses on Vinnie saying, "I think I get the point." In the foreground, you see Judge Haller's head from behind with two fingers supporting his right cheek. In the next shot, Haller replies, "No! I don't think you do," showing Haller's face straight on but with no fingers supporting his cheek. (00:32:13)

Continuity mistake: When the stuttering lawyer is questioning the dirty screen guy about what he saw, there's a blanket of perspiration on his forehead, but it disappears in the next shot when he never wiped his forehead.

Continuity mistake: In the scene outside with the judge, after the trial, and he is talking about the fax from NY. Ms Vito put her hand on Vinny's back with red fingernails. As they are driving down the road they are a dull mauve color.

Audio problem: After Vinny questions the old lady about her glasses, he walks back to the desk and high fives his fiance. Their hands don't touch but still produce a slap.

Trivia: During the stuttering lawyer's opening statements, if you look in the backround, you will see Vinny, Stan, and Ralph Macchio laughing. It's really obvious when the lawyer is walking back to the table, and Stan has a smirk on his face, trying not to laugh.

Question: Why did the sheriff claim that it was his own hunch that made him take it upon himself to see about any reports about a 1964 Pontiac Tempest stolen or abandoned? Shouldn't he have said something like, "At the request of Mr. Gambini, I investigated whether there were any"? Is the sheriff simply looking to steal some glory and take some credit for the turnaround of the case?

Matty Blast

Chosen answer: He never says that it was "his" idea. The actual quote from the movie is that on "a" hunch he looked it up. From the way it is worded in the movie, it appears he said it this way in order to appear impartial in bringing any new evidence to the court's attention, not necessarily just information that would benefit the defendant's case.

Answer: The sheriff made a point of telling Vinny that he doesn't work for the defense and Vinny should "do his own investigation." He's the local sheriff in a small town, while Vinny and the kids are unpopular and unwelcome visitors. The sheriff probably didn't want to appear like he was doing them any favors.
