Randall Bragg: I told you you'd never hang me, Cole.
Virgil Cole: Never ain't here yet.
Randall Bragg: Mr. Everett Hitch. You a drinking man, Everett?

Judge Callison: Mr. Whitfield, do you own a horse?
Joe Whittfield: Yes. Yes, sir.
Judge Callison: Well, son, I suggest while the bees are in the butter you get on your horse and ride. Ride and don't look back.
Judge Callison: Now! Ride hard, boy. Ride hard.
Answer: There's no explanation. It could be that no one thought of this. Also, even if they shot the horse, the girl could still be injured or killed. If the horse was only wounded, it could have bolted, reared up, or fallen and then rolled on top of the girl. There's many different scenarios that could have played out.
