I watched this movie on Amazon Prime.
So... I had seen some of the older Bond movies, including this one, a long long time ago. Like about 20 years ago, renting them from the Library as a kid. Most of them I hardly remembered but I wanted to finally start my journey of going back and watching all the old Bond movies again. Some a long over due re watch, others seeing for the first time.
Dr. No is where it all started. Well mostly. There was a TV adaptation of Casino Royale before this but as far as theatrical films, this was it. This movie was a great start, and really set the foundation for what Bond would become, lying the ground work for the following movies to build off the foundation and form the long running legacy still going strong 60 years later. Connery, while not my favorite Bond, firmly cemented himself as Bond from the word go. His first lines in the movie, even being his iconic "Bond... James Bond." A bold announcement of here he is.
Dr. No is a tad slow and has those first film moments where they are still trying to get a feel for the character, but did a great job with this first outing. The Bond theme, the characterization, the actor. This is where it all started.
The movie itself is all right to good. It's not amazing but it didn't have to be. Dr. No himself is an interesting villain with a cool gimmick... even if what his plan exactly is and what he's trying to do is a tad confusing at first.
Over all, while when people think of Bond this usually isn't' the first thing to come to mind, it still all started here. Good solid movie, and the birth of a real icon and movie legend.
Mistake Status: I have no real plans to do the Bond movies except the Brosnan era.
9.9/10.The first James Bond.Sean Connery was suave and elegant, possibly the book Bond brought to life. Here he's fighting a madman bent on wrecking the US space program. It set the groundwork for the future Bond movies as they had a solid plot, gorgeous ladies like Zena Marshall.good fights. If you're a Bond fan then this one is owed so much respect for it's the one that started it all.
James Bond: Good evening, sir.
M: It happens to be 3 a.m. When do you sleep, 007?
James Bond: Never on the Crown's time, sir.
Trivia: Sean Connery started going bald when he was 21. In 'Dr. No' (he was 32 then) and any subsequent movies in which he has hair, he was actually wearing a hairpiece.
Suggested correction: Contrary to popular belief, Sir Sean Connery was not wearing a hairpiece in his first two outings as James Bond. Although he was already balding by the time Dr. No was in production, he still had a decent amount of hair and the filmmakers used varying techniques to make the most of what was left. By the time of Goldfinger (1964), Connery's hair was too thin and so various toupees were used for his last Bond outings.
Question: Bond is very picky about having a martinti, shaken not stirred. If he drank a martini that was stirred, not shaken, would he be able to tell the difference?
Answer: Actually, yes, he would. The key to a vodka martini, Bond's preferred tipple, is that it should be served ice-cold. By shaking the drink, the ice cubes have a better chance to swish around the whole drink than they would if it was only stirred. It apparently also has the effect of dispersing the ingredients better, giving a different taste to the drink. In the spirit of scientific experimentation, some friends and I tried the drink both ways in a blind taste test a while back - it makes a surprising difference.
If you shake it, it turns cloudy.
Answer: Shaking also causes more melting of the ice resulting in a milder, if watered down, taste suited to Bond's sophisticated palate.
Answer: We tried that as well on several times and on many various evenings. There is a serious difference.
