Love Actually

Question: Does Kiera Nightly's character ever split up with her husband and go to his best friend? They show her with the husband at the end of the movie, but it seemed to me that she really loved the best friend. I was sure she would choose him over her husband.

Answer: No, Keira Knightley's character is not in love with the best friend; her kiss is one of compassion and affection, not love. Richard Curtis mentions this on the DVD commentary - he says something about Juliet being the sort of girl who would be used to men falling for her and treating them gently and kindly, which is what she does here.

Question: Even if Karl and Sarah don't get together at the end, I couldn't see what exactly was stopping them?

Answer: It's because of the complications that Sarah was having with her troubled brother. Apart from that, who's to say they don't eventually get together?

Hamster

In the follow-up short film (the Red Nose Day special) we learn she eventually gets her happy ending with a man played by Patrick Dempsey.

Answer: The end of the movie is not the end of the story.

Question: Why are Girls Aloud credited with being on the soundtrack, when that isn't their version of "Jump" which the Prime Minister listens to?

Josman

Chosen answer: Irrelevant when it comes to soundtracks, Girls Aloud released a version of Jump to coincide with the movie's release and the video for the song featured scenes from the movie, hence its inclusion.

Question: Whatever happens to Karl and Sarah? Are they the only ones who don't get together at the end?

Answer: In the follow-up short released last year it's revealed that, while she never got together with Karl, she ended up having a very happy life with a great husband (played by Patrick Dempsey) and children.

Answer: Karl and Sarah never get together, he just has that scene where he says Merry Christmas, and leaves.

Jack's Revenge

Answer: Sarah's brother's therapist tells her the constant contact is preventing his progress and she needs to give him more space. She and Karl then get together.

That never happens in any way, shape, or form in the film.

Question: Emma Thompson, who plays Karen, has two apparent brothers. The prime minister (Hugh Grant) and Daniel (Liam Neeson), is it right to assume that Daniel and the prime minister are brothers? Why don't we see them ever talk? All the other character stories we see interconnect.

Answer: Karen is the sister of David (the prime minister), but she is not related to Daniel, they are just friends.

Question: Is the mother or daughter who sing "All I Want for Christmas" at the Christmas pageant an actual singer? The way the teacher introduced the mother who helped put the number together, he made it sound as though she was a well-known musician, so I wondered if that was true.

Answer: Ruby Turner, playing Mrs Anderson is an accomplished singer. She started with Culture Club in the mid-80s and then went solo. Olivia Olson, playing Joanna, is also a singer. She won on Star Search and as far as I know has only released two songs. As for whether the Mom is supposed to be a real singer in the film, it's not made clear.

ChiChi

Answer: The staffer introducing the concert says "and background vocals coordinated by the great Mrs. Jean Anderson." While not explicitly stated in the film, and he could potentially mean that she is well-known in another field, or that she just did a great job with the concert, it certainly sounded to me that the character of Joanna's mom is intended to be a well-known singer.

Question: I was wondering what the title of the piece of music that plays in Love Actually when the little boy is running through the airport, and when Jaime asks Aurelia to marry him. I also heard in during The Aviator trailer. It's a really beautiful piece, and I've love to know the title.

Answer: I can't remember if it really is the same song, but the song that plays when he asks Aurelia to marry him is the 'Portugese Love Theme' by Craig Armstrong.

Answer: The music playing when he's running through the airport is "Prime Minister's Love Theme" by Craig Armstrong.

Question: Does anyone know of a website or other source that tells you how to mimic Hugh Grant's dance scene? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Answer: Watching the film would seem to be the best source. The moves don't appear to be terribly difficult and shouldn't be hard to work out.

Question: What is the song that plays when we see the silhouette of Colin and the American girls undressing him at their house?

Answer: It's called 'Wherever You Will Go' and it's by The Calling.

Question: What is the song playing at the funeral? The one that starts right after Liam Neeson says that his wife would like to say her last goodbye through song.

Answer: "Bye Bye Baby", by the Bay City Rollers.

Tailkinker

Question: I just wondered if the footage of people greeting their loved ones at the Heathrow arrival gate was real or done by actors?

Answer: It was real. Per the commentary, they set up a hidden camera, and when they got footage they liked, they approached the family to sign release papers.

Jack's Revenge

Question: Why is Daniel so supportive of his son being "in love"? It's not entirely unheard of for future couples to meet during childhood, but Daniel actually refers to the girl as the love of his son's life; something that would be dubious to most parents when their child is not even a teenager.

Answer: He's simply going along with what his stepson thinks. He knows, as most parents do, that arguing with their children about whether they're "really" in love is pointless.

Answer: Daniel is so supportive of his stepson because he obviously loves him deeply, despite his own pain at just losing his wife, he understands his stepson is not only dealing with the extremely painful experience of losing his mother and also dealing with the pain of his first real crush. Daniel is a great Dad.

Question: In the scene where Sam is at the airport and catches up with Joanna, he says "Oh Jesus" and then "Here, I've got to run", before the camera cuts to the scene of him going back to his Dad. Did he talk to her during this time, or give her a note or something?

Lavender

Chosen answer: It doesn't appear so. Joanna was surprised and impressed that he would risk so much just to see her before she left.

Question: What happened to the pages of Colin's book when they fell in the lake? Did him and Aurelia get them back or did they give up?

Answer: I think they got most or all of them back, as evidenced by the scene where they are both shivering and wet in the house. "How can I repay you? I know, I'll name a character after you..."

SexyIrishLeprechaun

Question: Who is the actress we only see as photographs or slides in her funeral that played Liam Neeson's wife and Sam's mother?

Answer: The photos of Joanna (Daniel's wife and Sam's mother) were of documentary filmmaker Rebecca Frayn.

Sierra1

Question: When Keira Knightley finds out that Andrew Lincoln loves her on the video, he gets really awkward and says something along the lines of 'I've got to go somewhere for lunch.' Then he pauses and says, 'It's a self-preservation thing' and walks out. When he says that does he mean the eating (ie his lunch) or the video (so he at least can look at her sometimes even if he can't have her)?

Answer: He refers to the fact that he is usually not very nice to her and pretends not to like her. That makes it easier for him not to show his love, which is important because otherwise he would spoil the friendship with her husband.

nightline

Her question is more about the disparity between his behavior towards her and this video which shows he's felt very differently from how he's acted. The video of her (close ups of just her) was meant only for him.

Answer: He wants her assigned to a different job so he won't see her anymore.

Myridon

Question: What characters are in Glasgow? The soundtrack says Glasgow love theme, and I don't know when it's there.

Answer: None of the movie is set in Scotland. That's just the name of the piece. The composer/performer Craig Armstrong is from there and that's what he titled the piece.

Myridon

Question: Does anyone know if there are any easter eggs on the dvd?

Answer: GameWinners doesn't list any, and I've checked every area on the DVD and found nothing, so unfortunately I think the answer's no.

Question: I'm slightly confused about the naked couple and their role in movie making. Are they the nude scene body double stand-ins for the actual actors, or are they there to prepare lighting and camera angles before the real actors come in and film the scene?

Answer: They are standing in for the actors while the camera angles and lighting are set up, so that the real actors don't have to sit around for a long time while everything gets ready. When the actual filming begins, the doubles swap with the real actor/actress.

Love Actually mistake picture

Continuity mistake: Juliet arrives at Mark's flat and brings banoffee pie with her, wanting to see the wedding video. She slips the video into the VCR and places the open pastry box on top of the TV stand. As she takes her jacket off the pastry box is gone, yet in the next shot of the TV the box is right next to the remote, which then changes position in the last shot when the remote disappears. The TV is in the center of the stand in some shots, but to the left of the stand in other shots. The video cassettes, etc., change/alter their position within these shots as well. (00:53:10)

Harry: Tell me, exactly, how long it is that you've been working here?
Sarah: Two years, seven months, three days and, I suppose, what, two hours?
Harry: And how long have you been in love with Karl, our enigmatic chief designer?
Sarah: Ahm, two years, seven months, three days and, I suppose, an hour and thirty minutes.
Harry: I thought as much.
Sarah: Do you think everybody knows?
Harry: Yes.
Sarah: Do you think Karl knows?
Harry: Yes.
Sarah: Oh that is bad news.
Harry: Well I just thought maybe the time had come to do something about it.
Sarah: Like what?
Harry: Invite him out for a drink and then after about twenty minutes casually drop into the conversation the fact that you'd like to marry him and have lots of sex and babies.

Trivia: Billy Bob Thornton agreed to appear in the movie without having seen the script. On the day of shooting he told director Richard Curtis that he was scared of Benjamin Disraeli's facial hair, and as such wouldn't be able to do the scene in Ten Downing Street because there was a picture of him on the wall. Curtis told him to keep his back to the picture throughout the scene, which he does, although you'll notice he looks quite nervous.
