Plot hole: When Slim attempts to leave with the help of her friends and is being beaten by Mitch, they are able to hear a bit of the ruckus while parked outside of a van. So how come Gracie, who is asleep in the same exact room as Mitch and Slim, is able to sleep through such a ruckus at all? It seems very laughable that a very young child such as Gracie wouldn't wake up in the middle of all that, not to mention she only does so when Phil physically wakes her up.

Revealing mistake: When Slim and her daughter are running away from the husband they run onto a bus. When it cuts to the bus driving away you can see that Slim is holding a dummy, which is supposed to be her daughter.
Ginny: You have a divine animal right to protect your own life and the life of your offspring.
Trivia: Sandra Bullock was originally cast to play the lead, Slim, but was unavailable due to another film's schedule.
Question: I found it odd that Slim's real name is never revealed. Why does she have this nickname, with no explanation as to why she never tells anyone her real name? Was there a deleted scene?
Answer: From memory her daughter says "I don't even think you're that slim" making a dig she's not that skinny, maybe it's due to her being thin?

Answer: I wonder if the nickname is related to the difficult times in her life. Her father was not around. She and her mother did not have much money. Maybe she felt that she had a "slim chance" of life getting easier.
