Skipped Parts (2000)

Plot summary

(1 vote)

Wealthy and controlling Caspar is running for office in 1960s North Carolina and doesn't want his "embarrassingly" free-spirited daughter Lydia and her 14-year-old "bastard" son Sam ruining his political career, so sends them away to be "out of sight." Lydia and Sam end up in Wyoming where Lydia starts dating a Blackfoot Indian (which would enrage Caspar if he knew) and Sam becomes friends with almost-14-year-old Maurey. Maurey wants to know what "sex" is about, so she and Sam - in their naivety - start a relationship. Lydia becomes aware of their "boy-girl game", but allows it to continue, provided they stop once Maurey hits puberty. [What could possibly go wrong?] Maurey becomes pregnant (before having her first period), leaving the young teenagers in a precarious situation.

Character mistake: Sam and Maurey were watching TV news coverage of Kennedy's assassination (11/22/63). When Petey got home (around 12:05 PM MST), he tried to change the channel, then said, "Mom, Maurey won't let me watch 'Rocky'." Laurabel/Mom said, "You know he watches 'Rocky' every afternoon." But school was let out early due to the assassination, so Petey would normally be in school at noon and therefore not be able to watch "Rocky" at that time in the afternoon. (00:21:30 - 00:23:17)

Trivia: The day John F. Kennedy was assassinated (11/22/63), school was let out early. When Maurey and Sam got to her house, it was 12:05 on the wall clock. When Sam went home, it was 12:25 PM. This makes it appear as though they knew about the assassination before it happened (around 12:30 PM), but Dallas falls under Central Standard Time (CST) and the movie is set in Wyoming, which is Mountain Standard Time (MST) or one hour behind CST. That is, 12 PM in Wyoming would be 1 PM in Dallas, Texas.
