Waterworld

Question: Where did the bad guys get the cigarettes, paper, beer, gasoline, and water. All of the guys said they've never seen land, so how did they get this stuff?

1

Answer: Well the Black Death cigarettes and the smeat cans were both sealed items so they theoretically were waterproof. The gasoline was refined from oil which was leftover in the Exxon Valdez and the water was purified from sources? Just like how the mariner purifies his pee. I mean if you can believe he can purify his pee on the trimaran then I'm sure the crew of the Valdez is capable of purification.

Answer: These points have been brought up ever since this movie came out. I guess you have to suspend a lot of disbelief!

Answer: Sealed stuff floats. They gather stuff just like the mariner.

Question: Why did they burn the Mariners boat? Wouldn't it have made more sense to capture it and use it for themselves? They know they are gonna run out of "Go Juice" at some point so why not use the fastest sail boat to find dry land?

1

Answer: If they'd have captured it and took it for themselves then they wouldn't have been able to follow them either. They could have used the Trimaran to find dry land a lot faster than using the tanker. Once they'd found dry land, simply go back to the tanker and tell them where it is so the tanker can make its way there too.

Answer: Most likely to make sure that the Mariner and Helen couldn't follow them and rescue Enola. They were trying to find Dryland and if Enola was taken from them, they'd never be able to find it. Also the smokers ship was filled with people and using the Mariner's boat and constantly going back and forth from Dryland to the ship would have taken too long. Better to use the ship they're all on and get them there quicker. Also, none of the Smokers could read the map that was on Enola's back.

Question: How much water would actually be needed to cover the entire earth?

Answer: About 71% of the Earth's surface is covered with water. The website How Stuff Works suggests that the oceans hold approximately 326 million trillion gallons of water, or about 96.5% of the liquid. By extrapolation, one could estimate that 100% of the earth would require about 459 million trillion gallons of water. However, there simply isn't sufficient water in the ice caps and other water bodies to float Noah's Ark. The water over the land masses would not be as deep as the waters of the oceans, which would suggest a lower number is possible. However, if there is truly NO land on which to set anchor for the denizens of Waterworld, then there would have to be sufficient water to cover the mountains of the world. That amount would be astronomical.

Question: Obviously the film is fictitious but surely the melting of the ice caps would not start the evolution of sea monsters, would it? Also, most smaller species would die off so there would be no food for the monsters to survive.

Answer: Judging from the missile sub with empty missile silos we see underwater, WWIII seems to have caused the rising water. I guess the idea is that radiation has mutated sharks and other animals (including the Mariner).

Question: Does anyone know what that spinning thing was at the top of the Trimaran's main mast?

Answer: A wind turbine to create the electricity he uses.

Question: Where and why did Gregor go? If he was going in search of dry land, why has he not gone earlier? Why did the mariner not try to find him, as he could have been a useful person to have on the boat and was a friend of the females? Why did the smoker's plane not shoot down Gregor?

Answer: Lot of questions here. 1) Gregor was building the airship to find Dryland and he left to get away from the Smokers. 2) He didn't go earlier because he wanted to be able to figure out the map on Enola's back first. 3) When they left, the Mariner didn't care about Gregor, Helen, or Enola and he couldn't catch Gregor anyway with his boat torn up. 4) The Smokers did try to shoot the airship down with the gunship, but they got distracted shooting one of their own people down, giving Gregor time to escape. The plane may not have had a gunner in at the moment. It was being used to tow the skiers.

Question: How did the Smokers track down the Mariners boat whilst they dived to the city? The Deacon shoots the Mariner and then when he notices that he's bleeding he says "Bring me the trackers " Whilst the Mariner and Helen are underwater, Enola sees something that looks like shark fins go under the boat.

Answer: It seems the Smokers have either trained or bred sharks for the purpose of tracking enemies by the scent of blood in the water.

Revealing mistake: Right before the Smokers show up, you can see land on the left hand side of the screen.

Helen: It's not what you think. They weren't after her.
Mariner: I saw what I saw.
Helen: What?
Mariner: No more lies. What are the marks on her back?
Helen: People-people say it's the way to Dryland.
Mariner: DRYLAND'S A MYTH!
Helen: No. You said that you know where it is. You did.
Mariner: Then you're a fool to believe in something you've never even seen before.
Helen: I've seen it. I've touched it. Dirt that was richer and darker than yours. It was in the basket we found Enola in.
Mariner: It doesn't exist!
Helen: Well, how can you be so sure?
Mariner: Because, I've sailed further than most have dreamed and I've never seen it.
Helen: But the things on your boat.
Mariner: Things on my boat what?
Helen: There are things on your boat that nobody has ever seen. What are these shells? And the music box? And the reflecting glass? Well, if not from Dryland then where? Where?
Mariner: You want to see Dryland? You really want to see it? I'll take you to Dryland.
