The Beach

Richard (Leo Dicaprio) is on vacation in Thailand, and meets up with some guys who talk to him about some legendary island paradise that exists in Thailand. Figuring the place doesn't even exist Richard makes nothing of it until he meets a man named Daffy in his hotel room. It turns out Daffy is from the secret island and gives Richard a map to it.

The next morning Richard finds Daffy dead by suicide. Richard and his new friends, Etienne and Francoise, head out for the island however Richard leaves a copy of the map for the guys he met earlier. After making it to the island and just escaping detection by the farmers Richard and company meet up with the group on the island led by a woman named Sal. Richard and Francoise eventually fall in love and everything is going well, until Richard goes into town with Sal for food and the guys Richard gave a map to show up and talk about it, unfortunately Sal overhears.

The copy-map guys try to go to the island like Richard but they get intercepted and killed by the farmers. The farmers then go to Sal and the group and say that if they want to stay on the island Sal must shoot Richard. Sal pulls the trigger, but the gun the farmer gave her was empty. Seeing what Sal is willing to do for the island everyone books and leaves.

Revealing mistake: When they are burying the Swede on the beach, you can see him blink when they throw sand into grave.

Richard: I had nothing left to offer but pure reflex. Pure reflex and mankind's basic drive for survival, that somehow shouts, "no - I will not DIE today!"

Question: Where did the filming for this movie take place? I assume there are many different areas, but the place I'm most interested in is the lagoon, where we see the brothers fishing, and where Richard has his encounter with the shark. Also, is this a populated area? It looks like it could be a good tourist attraction.

Knever

Chosen answer: It's Ko Phi Phi Leh island off the coast of Thailand. It's a protected area, off the beaten path, and tourism is discouraged. There are resorts on nearby islands.
