I looked up the F-5 Tiger, and those planes do look similar to what I saw in the movie, but also very similar to films of training jets I've seen. OK - I think I found the answer - the F-5 Tiger is the combat aircraft and the F-5 Tigershark is the training version. They look almost the same but not quite.
