Continuity mistake: In the scene where Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery are held prisoners in the cells in Alcatraz, Connery has made a rope and swings it for the first time, and the handle for one cell is brought down, opening the door of the cell beside Connery. However, when he tries for the second time and gets the correct handle, the handle used previously is back in its place, and not horizontal as it should have been.

Continuity mistake: When Goodspeed stabs himself in the heart with the syringe at the end, we see an aerial view of him lying on the ground, gasping. When he gets up to ignite the flares, the syringe is gone. You can't see it when he lands on his knees, and we don't see him pull it out.

Continuity mistake: The number of jets flying towards The Rock were 6, there's only 4 jetplanes when they approach the Golden Gate bridge and the number of jets flying under the bridge is 5.

Continuity mistake: As Mason escapes from the hotel, we see him running down the escalators to the kitchen. On his way down, he pushed over two waiters who fall, the waiter on our left falls onto his back on the close up shot, but as the shot changes to the wide shot we see him falling again onto his front.

Scrappy

Factual error: At the end there are F-18s that have United States Air Force painted on the side of them. There are not, nor have there ever been F-18s in the Air Force.

Factual error: Alcatraz does not have large underground caverns as shown in the movie. The Rock is just that, solid rock. The laundry is above ground and the only structures that could be considered underground are a few small cells.

Plot hole: When Cage is hiding the VX gas balls at the end by putting them in a drain you can see he is holding the loose ball, but then in an instant cut picks it up along with the chip.

Continuity mistake: In addition to the incorrect time for the opening sequence in the chamber, in the initial close-up shot of Cage you can see a clock on the right. The two hands are both near the seven, so about twenty-to seven then. In the wideshot of him, the clock shows the time as quarter-to instead. The original twenty-to time is used for the rest of the scene.

Factual error: In the scene where Frye and Darrow confront Hummel after he sent the rocket off-course, Major Baxter barks at Darrow: "You're talking to a general, soldier. Maintain discipline." We've been told that all the men are Marines, and that even though they are committing treason, they view themselves as Marines. No Marine, particularly a career officer, would address another Marine as "soldier."

Visible crew/equipment: When Mason is fighting the guy whose legs are on fire, watch Mason's hair. It's completely different from Sean Connery's. It's thicker and there's more of it, and at one point you can see the stunt guy's face.

Continuity mistake: When the Marines are at the Naval Weapons Depot, one of them drops the cylinder carrying the VX Poison Gas. They run out, and when the guy drops the canister (containing the cylinder of gas), the cylinder with the gas has disappeared.

Factual error: Navy SEALs are highly trained operatives with a wide variety of technical skills, including training on 'special' weapons of which VX is a part. At least two of the team members, if not all, would have training on these weapons and would know at a minimum how to render them safe. This would eliminate the need for Goodspeed to accompany the team, despite his FBI HRT training rotation during training at Quantico. In this light, the team would not allow Goodspeed to accompany the team as he does not have their training, nor knowledge of how they operate and thereby put the entire team at risk. Were the SEALs to need a specialist, the team leader would have selected and flown in a military member(s) with first hand, and hands on expertise in that exact weapon system and versed in military operations as opposed to a civilian, even an FBI agent.

Factual error: During the Humvee/Ferrari chase scene, Goodspeed slides to a stop in a 180 degree spin, and then the driver's airbag inflates. There was no impact that would've caused the inflators to get the signal to fire, they don't just inflate because the car spun out of control.

Continuity mistake: In the Hummer chase scene, when Sean Connery hits the meter maid vehicle, it goes up in flames with the car it was smashed into being destroyed. Yet when the Police cars get there only seconds after, both car and meter maid vehicle are only smashed up and not on fire.

Other mistake: When Nicolas Cage is chasing Sean Connery in the yellow Ferrari, someone already mentioned that the windshield breaks more than once and in the next shot it's in perfect condition again, well I say forget even that. When Cage drives onto the sidewalk and crashes into the meters, the windshield should have been completely destroyed, not cracked. And the same goes for the hood of the car, which is in perfect condition in the next shot.

Continuity mistake: At the end, when Nicholas Cage is being shot at on the light house, he has the green vx in his hand. Then when he reaches for the chip, it's on the ground again.

Continuity mistake: As the Seal team are about to enter the shower room we see them using fibre-optics to scan the area prior to entry. As they move the fibre-optic round towards the sensor we see that the camera is level with the sensor. The view from the fibre-optic suggests they are above the sensor. The angle in which they where facing the sensor also changes.

Scrappy

Continuity mistake: When Ed Harris decides to shake things up by firing one of his rockets, the FBI radar tracks the trajectory and determines that it is heading to Oakland. More specifically, the rocket is heading to the Oakland Coliseum where there is a football game being played. But when the movie shows the rocket as it is flying towards its target, the rocket flies over a hill and we see the packed stadium - Candlestick/3Com Park in San Francisco.

Continuity mistake: When Nicolas Cage drives through the window in the yellow Ferrari and the shot changes, he is coming out from a different window than in the first shot. In the first shot he emerges from the window to the left of the 7th Street Garage storefront ('Classic Autos' written on the window), but next shot he emerges from the window to the storefront's right. Also, note the now glassless window to the storefront's left, due to a previous take.

Factual error: When the F-18s are about to bomb The Rock, and fly low beneath the bridge - why aren't there trails on the water surface? A squadron of fighters with JET engines would do that at that altitude.

General Hummel: Do you know who I am? Did they tell you why I am doing this? Why I am out here? Or are they using you like they did everyobdy else?
John Mason: All I know is that you were big in Vietnam. I saw the highlights on television.
General Hummel: Then you probably have got no fucking idea what it means to lead some of the finest gentlemen on God's earth into combat, and then watch their memories get betrayed by their own damn government.
John Mason: I don't quite see how you can cherish the memory of the dead by killing another million. This is not combat, it's an act of lunacy, General Sir. Personally, I think you're a fucking idiot.
General Hummel: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Thomas Jefferson.
John Mason: "Patriotism is a virtue of the vicious," according to Oscar Wilde.
[Hummel knocks him to the ground.]
John Mason: Thank you for making my point.

Trivia: When Stanley introduces himself, Mason replies with "but of course you are". James Bond said the same thing to Plenty O'Toole in Diamonds are Forever, and both Bond and Mason were played by Sean Connery.

Question: During the SEAL team raid on the rock, they are using two "decoy choppers" which fly towards Alcatraz. What is the point of this? Wouldn't it be easier to just have the transport chopper fly all the way to drop zone under radar coverage?

killin_kellit

Chosen answer: Alcatraz is small enough and out in the middle of the bay that any lookout in a high point could see and hear a chopper, no matter where it approached from. The idea of the decoys was to split any enemy fire received. The whole insertion of SEALS was absurd, in a real situation like that, the SEALS would have been inserted by submarine or used dive motors to pull themselves to the island.
