Audio problem: As she sits on his desk talking about Carmen, Lauren Bacall says to Marlowe, "Norris fixed that, she was in all evening". This line is over dubbed, if you look closely at her lips she's obviously saying something else.

Audio problem: The second time he's in Geiger's house, Marlowe goes into several rooms and turns on a light switch as he snoops around. The light does not come on until a fraction of a second after the switch has been thrown, and the sound of the switch being thrown does not happen until after his hand stops moving.

Continuity: In Geiger's house when Marlowe finds the hidden camera, we see a vase on the left of the fireplace and it's shadow falls directly behind it. Marlowe doesn't touch any light switches but later in the scene the lighting has changed and the shadow of the vase is now falling to the right of it.

Continuity: The shades on the window that Marlowe kicks open to enter Geiger's house are a little less than one foot apart as he puts Carmen Sternwood onto the sofa. The next time we see them they're wide open even though no one has gone near them.

Continuity: Marlowe talks to Norris the Sternwood's butler at the front door and as he gets ready to leave he turns up his collar. In the next shot he turns up his collar again as he walks away (1945 Version on DVD).

Visible crew/equipment: When the light hits Dorothy Malone's glasses in the Acme Book Shop the flat reflection reveals they are flat-lensed prop glasses.

Continuity: As Marlowe leaves Geiger's bookstore a policeman is walking by outside. In the next shot the policeman is gone.

Continuity: The papers in Marlowe's hand are reversed between shots. At first the folded sheet is on the right then when Gen. Sternwood says, "If I did she'd just suck her thumb and look coy" the folded sheet is on the left.

Continuity: When he first meets Gen. Sternwood, Marlowe takes off his coat and a book of matches appears behind his glass of Brandy on the table to the right of him. Later it disappears again.

Continuity: As they talk about Vivian and Carmen, Marlowe says, "both pretty, and both pretty wild" to Gen. Sternwood and sweat appears on Marlowe's entire shirt which was previously dry.

Other: Earlier in the movie at Geiger's house, Marlowe calls Chief Insp. Bernie Ohls of the District Attorney's Office and the six digits of Bernie's phone number are 122-145. At the very end of the movie,, he's with Lauren Bacall at Geiger's house and again calls Bernie Ohls. This time he dials the same phone at the DA's office but leaves off one digit, calling 12-145.

Continuity: There's a crooked sixth rail on Art Huck's porch that we see up close as he jumps over it when Marlowe shoots at him. Later when Marlowe says to Lauren Bacall ," we'll have to take his car" we see the railing again and it has been set straight.

Continuity: As Carmen and Marlowe speak to each other in his apartment the lamp on the table against the wall on her left rotates between shots and is moved closer to the candle holder next to it.

Continuity: After speaking to Lauren Bacall on a restaurant pay phone, two thugs jump Marlowe as he walks past an alley on his way back to his car. As the thug on the left throws a punch at him his fist doesn't even go near Marlowe's face.

Visible crew/equipment: As Marlowe walks up to Eddie Mars' nightclub the bright reflection of a studio light can be seen in the window on the right of the door.

Continuity: Eddie Mars pours Marlowe a drink and he puts the bottle down dead center on a tray on top of the liquor cabinet. He doesn't go near the bottle but later when we see it again it's right of the center of the cabinet, and in the last shot of it it's to the left of the center of the cabinet.

Continuity: The hostess shows Marlowe Eddie Mars' room but in the next shot as he walks into it a table with a statue on it replaces the chair that was there in the previous shot.

Continuity: Lauren Bacall asks Marlowe, "tell me, what do you usually do when you're not working?" and the matches sticking out of the holder on the table are rearranged between shots.

Continuity: As Marlowe sits down Dist. Atty. White is playing with a back scratcher and his left hand is closed around the end of it. In the next shot his left thumb is sticking straight up in the air touching the tip of the back scratcher (1945 Version on DVD).

Other: Joe Brody trips Carmen Sternwood as she walks through his door holding a gun on him and the cameraman totally loses focus in the close up of her legs.
