Continuity: After taking Carmen Sternwood to her bedroom, Norris the Sternwood's butler helps Marlowe put on his over coat as he prepares to leave. Marlowe wasn't wearing it when he came into the house though and there's no indication that he had it in Carmen's car because when they left Arthur Gwynn Geiger's house he didn't have it on.

Continuity: Marlowe goes into Geiger's house again to snoop around and he finds that Geiger's dead body has been removed. As he stands over the spot where the body was his shadow falls right on the bloodspot. In the next shot of him kneeling down and touching the blood stained carpet there's no shadow.

Continuity: As Marlowe goes threw Arthur Gwynn Geiger's strong box, the horse on his desk moves closer to the phone between shots.

Visible crew/equipment: The shadow of a boom mike or some other large piece of equipment can be seen moving on the window shade above Marlowe's head as he prepares to leave Arthur Gwynn Geiger's house.

Continuity: After he brings her home from Geiger's house, Marlowe plops Carmen Sternwood onto her bed and both her hands are above her head. In the next shot her right hand is at her side.

Continuity: When she first meets Marlowe, Lauren Bacall pours her drink and the flask on the liquor table moves to the left in front of the seltzer bottle between shots.

Continuity: In the Hollywood Public Library Marlowe writes "Chevalier Audubon" on the top of a piece of paper and starts writing something else on the second line. In the next shot he's writing on the top of the piece of paper again.

Continuity: Marlowe says to Dorothy Malone in the Acme Book Shop, " I was just wondering if you have to?" and she puts the paper cup in her right hand down twice.

Continuity: When she first meets Marlowe, Lauren Bacall's hair is combed between shots as the left side is different in her close ups when she says to Marlowe, "I doubt if even that would help".

Continuity: Marlowe walks in on Lauren Bacall as she's pouring a drink, and she's standing to the left of the fireplace. In the next shot she's moved over about a foot to her right and is standing in front of the left side of the fireplace.

Continuity: In the Acme Book Shop, Marlowe says to Dorothy Malone, "I got my car…" and her hands go from being at her sides to out in front of her playing with the pencil between shots.

Continuity: When Lauren Bacall first meets Marlowe she's pouring a drink and the level of the liquid in the glass goes above her left index finger. In the next shot she's still pouring the drink and the liquid goes above her left index finger a second time.

Continuity: As Marlowe goes up to the front desk the librarian asks him, "Did you find what you wanted?" and another librarian is helping someone else. In the next shot that other librarian is not helping anyone and has her back towards the camera.

Continuity: After she puts them down, the letters on the table that Carmen was looking at are rearranged when Norris the Sternwood's butler calls Marlowe in to see Gen. Sternwood.

Continuity: The papers Marlowe is holding in the close-up are different than the pile of papers that Gen. Sternwood handed him. In the close-up all the papers are flat but in the long shot one is folded.

Continuity: When Marlowe walks over to the bar to get another drink the napkin on the liquor tray has been moved and is draped over the side of the tray differently even though no one went near it.

Continuity: Lauren Bacall's not pointing anywhere near the car when she shouts, " there, there, behind the wheel" in order to distract Lash Canino. He eventually shoots at the right spot anyway as he tries to kill Marlowe.

Continuity: Lash Canino's right arm is extended out in front of him as he shoots at Marlowe's car. In the next shot his elbow is at a 45-degree angle as Marlowe confronts him.

Continuity: Lauren Bacall takes Marlowe's handkerchief out of his jacket pocket and she begins to wipe off the water that Mona Mars threw in his face. He stops her and says, "Never mind, Angel, the water feels good". She puts the handkerchief back in his pocket, but two shots later it's not there. Then at the end of the scene, it reappears again.

Continuity: As he sits tied up by the couch, Marlowe says to Lauren Bacall, "Take this thing out of my mouth," and his entire face is wet with the water that Pat Clark threw on him. In the next shot as she takes the cigarette out of his mouth before they kiss, his face is almost dry (1945 Version on DVD).
