Continuity: Marlowe says to Eddie Mars as he's about to leave his office, " Oh, Eddie, you don't have anybody watching me, do you?" And the collar of Marlowe's shirt is tucked under his jacket. The next time we see it about a second later it's been ruffled up and is no longer tucked under his jacket.

Continuity: After Marlowe walks out of Eddie Mars place to his car he reaches for the gun under his dashboard with both hands. In the next shot his left hand is behind the gun.

Continuity: Mars' thugs meet up with Marlowe at the bar and tell him that Mrs. Rutledge wants to see him. The two people sitting at the bar behind the thug in the center get up and move between shots.

Continuity: In the restaurant Marlowe sits looking down at the table as Lauren Bacall talks about General Sternwood and says, "he considers the case closed". She's holding her pocketbook with the strap between the first and second finger of her left hand but in the next shot the strap is in a different position near her left thumb.

Continuity: After they finish their drinks in the restaurant Marlowe says to Lauren Bacall , " I don't want to hurt you, I'm trying to help you" and she goes from holding her right hand in her left to holding her left hand in her right between shots as she looks at him.

Audio problem: As Marlowe walks over to Eddie Mars' room the buzzer over dub doesn't ring when the hostess pushes it and continues after the hostess takes her hand off of it.

Continuity: Marlowe stands in a doorway and watches Lauren Bacall singing and we see several people walking through the front door behind him. In the next shot there are only two women walking through the front door.

Continuity: Lauren Bacall sings "Tears Flowed Like Wine" and in the shots of her from behind the band there are several more extras between her and Marlowe than there are when the camera films her from his vantage point at the door.

Continuity: Chief Insp. Bernie Ohls hands the gun to Capt. Cronjager and we see that the lamp to the left of Dist. Atty. White is on. In the next shot if you look at the back of Dist. Atty. White's chair and the blinds behind him it's easy to see that the lamp is now off (1945 Version on DVD).

Continuity: Marlowe walks into the DA's office with Chief Insp. Bernie Ohls behind him. At first Marlowe's hat is covering his chest. Than in the next shot as he walks through the door, the hat and his right arm are at his side (1945 Version on DVD).

Visible crew/equipment: In his apartment after Carmen and Lauren Bacall have gone, Joe Brody says to Marlowe, " I followed him, he turned west on Sunset…" and a boom mike shadow can be seen several times crossing the couch behind Agnes.

Continuity: After Carmen Sternwood comes into the apartment Marlowe walks over to Joe Brody to get the gun he has in his right coat pocket and Joe's hands are near his waist. In the next shot his hands are raised up around his chest.

Continuity: In Joe Brody's apartment Marlowe says to Lauren Bacall, "Don't argue with the man, do as he says, sit down". She sits down on the right side of the couch next to the pillow and never moves from that spot, but several shots later in a wide shot she's sitting in the center of the couch.

Continuity: Marlowe walks into Joe Brody's apartment at the Randall Arms and there's a dark shadow across Joe's face as he answers the door. In the next shot as Marlowe walks in his face is lit up.

Continuity: When Marlowe and Lauren Bacall walked into his office the phone on his desk was facing the back of the room. Later, Lauren Bacall asks to use the phone and it's rotated 45 degrees and is now facing them.

Continuity: Marlowe gets into a cab in front of Geiger's store and sits on the right of the backseat behind the driver. In the next shot he's sitting on the left side of the backseat talking to her.

Continuity: As Marlowe walks into Geiger's store for the second time, one day has gone by but the cars outside the office are the same and haven't moved an inch.

Continuity: As Marlowe walks out of Geiger's store there's no car in front of the door. In the next shot from a different angle there's a car right in front of the door.

Continuity: Marlowe doesn't lock the door as he and Lauren Bacall walk into his office. Later when she walks out the door is locked.

Continuity: The next morning after going to Lido Pier, Marlowe walks into the waiting room of his office and Lauren Bacall is sitting there reading a magazine as she waits for him. The lighting on her changes and the picture on the wall behind her head is lowered about six inches between shots.
