Continuity: In the restaurant Lauren Bacall pays Marlowe and says, "I hope this is satisfactory". When she hands him the check she's holding it from the edge but in the next shot she's holding it from the bottom and he's holding it from the edge.

Continuity: Lauren Bacall walks into a restaurant, and sees Marlowe at the bar with his head tilted back as he finishes his drink, and says, "Hello". The guy to the right of Marlowe is looking at the bartender but in the next shot his head has turned ninety degrees as he's now talking to his friend.

Continuity: In the DA's office Marlowe says to Capt. Cronjager, " That's all, I was in a tough spot, I was probably wrong but I wanted to protect my client" and Marlowe's hat is on the DA's desk right next to his left arm. In the next shot an ash tray with a smoldering cigarette is next to his left arm (1945 Version on DVD).

Continuity: Dist. Atty. White says to Marlowe, "And outside of Taylor, Lundgren and Brody, no one else knew about the Geiger killing?". A black appointment book on the middle of the DA's desk disappears between shots (1945 Version on DVD).

Continuity: Before Marlowe sits down Dist. Atty. White has a statue on his desk between Marlowe and himself. In the next shot after Marlowe sits down the statute disappears then reappears again in the shot after that (1945 Version on DVD).

Continuity: Joe Brody's killer, Carol Lundgren, gets into Marlowe's car and looks directly through the windshield. In the next shot when Marlowe gets into the car Lundgren's head is turned to the right looking at him getting in.

Continuity: Marlowe says to Bernie Ohls at the District Attorney's Office, "you, come up to 7244 Laverne Terrace". He's calling from Arthur Gwynn Geiger's house and we just saw the number on the mailbox when he came in and it's 460 Laverne Terrace.

Continuity: When Marlowe pulls his car up in front of the Randall Arms Apartments and waits for Lauren Bacall his windshield has two stickers on the left of it. A few shots later after Lauren pulls up he gets out and follows her into the building. The car he's sitting in has changed as we see the shadow of the windshield on the front seat and there are now three stickers on this windshield.

Continuity: Eddie Mars is twirling the key to Geiger's house around his right index finger, but when Marlowe says, "Oh, that's too bad, you got a better one?" and we see him from a different angle he's not doing it. Then in the next shot before he finds the blood stain on the carpet, he's doing again.

Visible crew/equipment: At Geiger's house, Marlowe talks with Eddie Mars and asks Carmen to, "Run along angel". As she walks out of the house the shadow of the camera appears on her back.

Continuity: Marlowe says to Lauren Bacall as she sits on his desk, "Then outside of what the woman said, you don't know any reason why they want five thousand dollars for it?". Lauren Bacall's right leg is higher than her left leg but then in the next shot they're reversed and her left leg is higher than her right.

Continuity: As they go into his office Marlowe opens the front door for Lauren Bacall. In the next shot a shadow appears on the door where there wasn't one before.

Continuity: In his office, Lauren Bacall talks about Carmen to Marlowe and says, "She was asleep when I left" and her hands are in her lap. In the next shot her left hand is scratching her knee.

Continuity: As Marlowe walks back into Geiger's store the second time the secretary opens up a book with her left hand and proceeds to insert a piece of paper into it with her right. In the next shot the book is closed.

Continuity: Marlowe goes home after snooping around Geiger's house and we see the number 206 on his door with the words "Philip Marlowe, Private Investigator" underneath. Later when Inspector Bernie Ohls knocks on the door we see only the number 206 on it as Marlowe opens it.

Continuity: As she sits on his desk talking about Carmen, Marlowe says to Lauren Bacall, "Go ahead and scratch". The picture of Carmen is in his right hand but in the next shot both the picture and the envelope are in both hands.

Continuity: After taking Carmen Sternwood to her bedroom, Norris the Sternwood's butler helps Marlowe put on his over coat as he prepares to leave. Marlowe wasn't wearing it when he came into the house though and there's no indication that he had it in Carmen's car because when they left Arthur Gwynn Geiger's house he didn't have it on.

Continuity: Marlowe goes into Geiger's house again to snoop around and he finds that Geiger's dead body has been removed. As he stands over the spot where the body was his shadow falls right on the bloodspot. In the next shot of him kneeling down and touching the blood stained carpet there's no shadow.

Continuity: As Marlowe goes threw Arthur Gwynn Geiger's strong box, the horse on his desk moves closer to the phone between shots.

Visible crew/equipment: The shadow of a boom mike or some other large piece of equipment can be seen moving on the window shade above Marlowe's head as he prepares to leave Arthur Gwynn Geiger's house.
