Continuity: Marlowe says to Dorothy Malone in the Acme Book Shop, " I was just wondering if you have to?" and she puts the paper cup in her right hand down twice.

Visible crew/equipment: When Lauren Bacall and Marlowe speak at their first meeting she says, "Now look Mr. Marlowe my father's not well" and the camera's shadow can be seen on Marlowe's back.

Continuity: Marlowe walks in on Lauren Bacall as she's pouring a drink, and she's standing to the left of the fireplace. In the next shot she's moved over about a foot to her right and is standing in front of the left side of the fireplace.

Continuity: As Marlowe walks into Geiger's bookstore his handkerchief is sticking out of his jacket pocket. He never touches it again but the next time we see it it's neatly tucked into the pocket of his jacket.

Continuity: At Arthur Gwynn Geiger's house, Marlowe finds the camera hidden in a hollow sculpture and in the close up it's in direct light. In the next shot it's covered by Marlowe's shadow.

Continuity: After Marlowe leaves Geiger's bookstore he walks across the street to the Acme Book Shop and a man is walking in just before him. In the next shot two women are walking out.

Continuity: When he first meets Gen. Sternwood, Marlowe takes off his coat and a book of matches appears behind his glass of Brandy on the table to the right of him. Later it disappears again.

Continuity: After she puts them down, the letters on the table that Carmen was looking at are rearranged when Norris the Sternwood's butler calls Marlowe in to see Gen. Sternwood.

Continuity: As they talk about Vivian and Carmen, Marlowe says, "both pretty, and both pretty wild" to Gen. Sternwood and sweat appears on Marlowe's entire shirt which was previously dry.

Continuity: Carmen Sternwood walks down the steps and picks up and looks at the mail when she first spots Marlowe. If you look at the handles on the side of the flowerpot you'll see that the centerpiece of roses on the table is rotated and rearranged between shots.

Continuity: When Philip Marlow goes back to his apartment the camera zooms in on the card with his name and profession on the door right below the apartment number, yet when he opens the door when Vivian comes, the card is missing.

Other: Earlier in the movie at Geiger's house, Marlowe calls Chief Insp. Bernie Ohls of the District Attorney's Office and the six digits of Bernie's phone number are 122-145. At the very end of the movie,, he's with Lauren Bacall at Geiger's house and again calls Bernie Ohls. This time he dials the same phone at the DA's office but leaves off one digit, calling 12-145.

Continuity: Lauren Bacall's not pointing anywhere near the car when she shouts, " there, there, behind the wheel" in order to distract Lash Canino. He eventually shoots at the right spot anyway as he tries to kill Marlowe.

Continuity: Before the altercation with Art Huck, Marlowe goes to his car to get his gun and we see that there's no shrubbery on the right of it. Later he hides behind his car as Lash Canino holds Lauren Bacall hostage and there's a tree right next to him.

Continuity: As Mona Mars and Marlowe talk about Eddie Mars on the left behind him, Marlowe's coat is draped over the couch. If you look closely only his coat is on the couch, but later when Mona storms out, a hat appears on top of the coat. At the end of this scene, the coat is knocked off the back of the couch and appears in a pile with the hat above.

Other: Marlowe tells Lauren Bacall to start screaming in 20 seconds after he leaves the room, she does and Lash Canino is outside and hears her. He runs into the house and if you look closely the prop porch railing almost falls over as he runs by because the crew did not attach it properly. Later we see it again and it's attached properly.

Continuity: For some information she has, Marlowe meets Agnes Lowzier in her car at the corner of Rampart and Oakwood and hands her two hundred dollars in a nice neat pile. In the next shot of her counting it, the pile is spread out.

Audio problem: Marlowe fakes a flat and let's the air of his front drivers side tire. They over-dub the of the sound of the air rushing out for several seconds and then all of a sudden the car drops.

Continuity: Marlowe walks into Art Huck's garage and Lash Canino says, "You got time to fix his tire?". Canino doesn't move an inch in the 12 seconds between the two shots were we see him but all the stuff behind him is rearranged. Most notable is the lamp used to dry the automotive paint, which if you look at its label, has been rotated 180 degrees without any one going near it.

Continuity: Marlowe pulls up in front of Art Huck's garage and gets out of his car to scope out the joint. When he first drives up there are no trees behind him but in the next close-up shot as he opens his car the door, there are several trees behind him.
