Plot hole: Ordered to kill him, the Federation squadron stakes Avon down - on a sand dune. Naturally, he has no trouble pulling loose and clobbering them all. This is hardly just a "character choice": it's a plot hole the size of Tuskeegee. A trained military unit (which they were) would never be so stupid.
