Correction: The average avalanche travels at 60-80 mph (see: www.avalanche.org/~uac/Common-questions.html). Sure, that's probably faster than the snowboard was moving, but he did have a head start. The avalanche could have been moving much slower than that, the slowest recorded avalanche only moved at about 2 mph (see:www.weathernotebook.org/transcripts/1999/02/18.html).
