Trivia: While most of the film was shot in Massachusetts, the cliff scenes were filmed in Minnesota at Palisade Cliff. The vast water you see is Lake Superior. Scenes in the beginning (and the last shot) were shot in New Mexico and Nevada near Lake Mead.

Culkin had just come off Home Alone 2, and studios were hesitant to show him in a negative role. The film's one use of the F word was added after the decision was made to keep the film rated R.
