Factual error: At the start of the film the father (Cedric Hardwicke) alights from a LNER suburban train then walks to his Wimbledon home. The film is set in 1913 but the LNER was not formed until 1923. That apart, LNER suburban services did not serve Wimbledon. A few scenes later the father and mother are sending off their son at Liverpool Street Station on his journey to Osborne Royal Naval College at Dartmouth. Strange since Dartmouth would have been (and still is) reached from Waterloo.

Factual error: In 1940, Billy Hill is taken to gaol in a black Morris Commercial J Type van. Production of this model did not start until 1949. The actual van in the scene was made in 1957. (00:32:37)

Factual error: In 1940 3 of Alf White's men are arrested. As they are taken out of the pub they were in Alf and his son stand in the doorway. To their left (viewer's right) are posters for Floyd Patterson (who would have been aged 4 or 5 at the time) and the Platters (formed in 1952) and Lonnie Donegan (started performing 1949). Factual error: Churchill's ride on the Underground to Westminster (disregarding whether or not it happened) would have been on either the District or Circle line, both of which, being sub-surface lines, use larger rolling stock. The action took place on a much smaller "tube" type train.

Factual error: In the last 20 minutes of the film the title character is shown in London at a bomb site. A double decker bus is in a crater. The bus is painted in the correct livery. Unfortunately it is of a type that was not manufactured until after the war. It is a post-war RT type. Pre-war versions had a small box in the centre of the roof, at the front, which carried the route number. Driver's cab side window curved down towards the front and front window curved down towards the side. The bus in the film has none of these features.

Factual error: When the ambulance arrives the policeman, at the crash scene, is wearing a City of London Police helmet (different from the Met) yet he is in a Metropolitan Police area.
