Trivia: The opening of the film is a direct nod to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Trivia: Mermaid Barbie was originally going to be Denise Richards, but she had to drop out. Dua Lipa replaced her.

Trivia: Emma Mackey was partly cast as she and Margot Robbie are often confused for each other. Greta Gerwig wanted to make a joke about that fact in the film, but once they were both dressed up as their respective characters they didn't look like each other much, so the idea was scrapped.

Trivia: Ruth Handler (Rhea Perlman), co-founder of Mattel and creator of Barbie, did indeed faced tax issues. In 1978 she was accused of evading $1.5 million in taxes by hiding money in Swiss bank accounts and using shell corporations. In 1979, she pled guilty to tax evasion.

Trivia: "Barbie for President" is an actual line of Barbies, originating in 1992. Issa Rae's appearance is based on the 2004 version.

Trivia: The odometer on Barbie's car shows 031959 - the first Barbie was launched in March 1959.

Trivia: The studio wanted the scene on the bench to be cut, arguing it had no impact on the story as a whole. Greta Gerwig refused, saying "If I cut the scene, I don't know what this movie is about".

Trivia: "I'm Just Ken" was mostly put together as a joke by Mark Ronson, but Greta Gerwig liked the song so much she wanted it included. When Ryan Gosling heard it he pushed for it to be a full blown song and dance routine. Mark Ronson's said how much Ryan Gosling's performance added to the original idea.

Trivia: Gloria's husband is played by America Ferrera's actual husband, Ryan Piers Williams.
