The Karate Kid (1984)

Question: Why does Daniel get annoyed with Miyagi after he says Daniel was lucky he didn't hurt his hand falling off his bike?

Answer: Daniel's wounds came from fighting the Cobra Kai guys but he tells Miyagi that he was injured falling off of his bike. Miyagi sees through this and sarcastically says that he's lucky his hand wasn't hurt.

I think he was also subtle letting him know he knew he didn't really fall off his bike because if he had, he would have at the very least scraped his hands...especially if he fell hard enough to cause that much damage to his face.

He was still trying to hide it. However, if you fall, you instinctively put out your hands, and they would be scraped up. Miyagi, older and experienced in life, knew better, but Daniel wasn't going to admit it outright.

General questions

There was a movie I recall seeing in the 80s where after a guy (who was not of the nicest sort) died, he was given an option to come back and live as a woman with a vague goal before he could get into heaven. Toward the end I recall him becoming pregnant with a friend's child and dies giving birth. Anyone recall the name of this movie?

Answer: This is the movie "Switch" starring Ellen Barkin and Jimmy Smits.

Question: What was the "substance" in the eye drops that was dispatched into the water?

Jason Riley

Chosen answer: The substance is Visine Eye drops which is an old bartender trick for obnoxious drunks. Just a couple of drops in a drink will indeed make the person feel ill.

General questions

What film is about a blond guy who isn't allowed to see his kids, so he goes home and shoots a couple of people with an Uzi? Then points a gun at a man behind a restaurant counter, because he's a couple of minutes late for the breakfast menu? I think it was made in the 90's and the main character might be played by Michael Madsen, but I'm not sure. I only saw a bit of it so that might not be a main point in the film.

Answer: This is the movie "Falling Down" starring Michael Douglas.

Question: This applies to most prison movies, but is most prevalent in Shawshank. How, roughly, would a prison contraband system like what Red has set up work? It's made clear that Red can get pretty much anything, for the right price, and it's shown that the contraband he "orders" comes in with laundry and the like - so he obviously has somebody on the outside that finds out what Red needs, buys it, and then has it smuggled in. But how does Red get his "order" out? And what's in it for the outside contacts? They're paying for the posters, whiskey, playing cards, etc with their money and taking a risk by sneaking it into the prison. what is Red doing to make it worth their while? I know prisoners make money for their work but it's a very small amount and there's no way he could earn enough to make a profit. Red has a life sentence, so he can't promise his buddies on the outside (smuggling in the goods) that he'll pay them back when he gets out. Also, on the inside (of every prison movie ever) prisoners always do their bartering with packs of cigarettes as currency. Where do all these smokes come from? Do prisons issue rations of cigarettes? They can't all be contraband.

Answer: Since very little is mentioned about Red's life outside of prison, any number of possibilities could exist. Perhaps Red comes from a wealthy family with connections. Perhaps Red became very good friends with a former guard who still makes sure his little system works. It would appear that all of the guards and even the warden know about the system but do nothing about it figuring that it keeps morale from getting low.

Answer: Taking into account a few dollars to someone in prison is valuable...It seems as if Red has a contact on the outside who simply provides him with requested items. Red probably sends money to the source in reverse of how the items are sent in. Each person who touches it (the loading dock guy, the source, etc.) probably gets a piece of Red's take.

Question: When Homer opens the curtains from the Red Rash Inn Motel room, there are several Advertising sign posters in foreign languages. The one in the middle-right is in Korean and it advertises classes to learn English with a Texan accent. Can someone explain what this joke is about?

Answer: I believe the joke is supposed to be that the way Texans speak is a language all its own.

Mad Max 2 (1981)

Question: How did the gyro captain and especially the little boy get back to the rest of the group from the refinery without attracting Humungus and his crew? The caravan left in the opposite direction like 15 minutes before, mad max had no vehicle to drive back, the boy can't drive at all, and the gyro captain crashed his gyro. But in the end the boy and the gyro captain manage to get back into the caravan before sunset without Humungus following.

Answer: The gyrocopter was just unable to fly. It still could roll along the ground. It is possible that he repaired it to get back to the rest of the group. As for Humungus and his minions, I'm pretty sure Humungus was killed in the impact with the truck that Max was driving. The few surviving minions probably lost interest in the whole affair when they lost their leader which one can assume when you see them turn around after seeing the spectacular collision and not even bothering to see if anyone survived.

Question: Why does the Emperor bother to rescue Anakin? After all, he has been defeated, lost most of his limbs and is near death. The Emperor has reached his goal and if he can take Yoda on like that, surely any remaining Jedi shouldn't be a problem for them?

Answer: The Emperor has not quite reached his goal of ruling the galaxy. In addition, a Sith Lord needs an apprentice. Since Anakin is EXTREMELY powerful with the Force, a broken Anakin (that the Emperor knows can be repaired back to a useful state) is better than trying to find another apprentice powerful enough to help him begin his conquest of the galaxy.
