Correction: Considering Margaret's mental state and the nature of her relationship with Carrie, it's likely this isn't the first time she's thrown something at her. Thus, Carrie's flinch could've simply been due to her expecting that something was coming.
Correction: Well, yeah. I flinch, too, when something is flying at my face.
