The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

Continuity mistake: When Buster is shot, his hat with the hole in it disappears.

Factual error: When Buster joins the card game in the saloon, he looks at the hand of the player that had just left. Given the circumstances in the saloon, the cards cannot be spot clean and white as fresh snow. Also, they seem to be plastic cards, which did not exist yet back then.

Continuity mistake: In the saloon scene, Buster sits at the table, then later stands up. He is right next to the table. Then we see a wider side shot, where he and his chair have teleported away from the table. He does his kicks then he is back close by the table again.

Trivia: Part of what made the Coen Brothers agree to make the film for Netflix was that the traditional studio system just isn't funding films like "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" the way they used to. Studios are instead focusing much more on big-budget comic-book movies and reboots, or super low-budget ventures like horror films. The Coens found Netflix to be one of the only companies that seemed to understand the project and be willing to fund it. Although co-director Joel Coen did lament that he wishes the film had a traditional theatrical release, as he feels audiences respond to and respect movies in a different way on the big screen.

Trivia: This movie represents several firsts for the Coen Brothers. Including this being the first Coen Brothers' film to be shot digitally instead of on film, and their first movie to be made primarily for the streaming market instead of theaters. It is also their longest film, coming in at 132 minutes.

Buster Scruggs: Misanthrope? I don't hate my fellow man, even when he's tiresome and surly and tries to cheat at poker. I figure that's just a human material, and him that finds in it cause for anger and dismay is just a fool for expecting better.

Alice Longabaugh: He had fixed political beliefs. All of his beliefs were quite fixed. He would upbraid me for being wishy-washy. I never had his certainties. I suppose it is a defect.
Billy Knapp: I don't think it's a defect at all. Oh no. Uncertainty. That is appropriate for matters of this world. Only regarding the next are vouchsafed certainty.

Billy Knapp: I believe certainty regarding that which we can see and touch, it is seldom justified, if ever. Down the ages, from our remote past, what certainties survive? And yet we hurry to fashion new ones. Wanting their comfort. Certainty... is the easy path. Just as you said.

Buster Scruggs: Sir, it seems that you're are a no better a judge of human beings than you are a specimen of one. Just on a brief inventory I'd say you could use yourself a shave and a brighter disposition. And lastly, if you don't my mind me aspersing your friends... a better class of drinking buddies.
