Men of Honour

In the face of Captain Hanks, and before the Chief of Naval Personnel, Senior Chief Brashear defends himself as a competent and capable diver even in the absence of his leg. After Brashear embarrasses Hanks, Hanks orders a 290 pound Navy diving suit brought in, in the hopes that Brashear will be scared to don the suit. Brashear demands the opposite, that he be allowed to walk the required 12 steps immediately. Hanks opposes the idea, but Chief Sunday enters the room. Hanks insults him, but Sunday takes command of the detail. Brashear dons the suit and walks the steps with great difficult; on the 8th step, Brashear's remaining leg audibly fractures under the weight of the suit. He is near to quitting, when Sunday recites the speech he gave to Brashear when he first entered diving school; he then orders Brashear to complete the steps. He does, and Hanks is forced to concede - Brashear is reinstated into the United States Navy as a diver and Senior Chief Petty Officer. Sunday salutes Brashear one last time before departing.
The epilogue states that Brashear became a Navy Master Diver two years after being reinstated, and retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer.
