The Matrix

Continuity mistake: During the lobby shoot out Neo does a cartwheel to pick up a gun on the floor. If you look closely at the wide shoot, his hand grazes the gun and starts to lift off the ground without it. In the close up shot imediately after, he picks up the gun near the trigger. (01:43:22)

Continuity mistake: Near the end of the film we see Neo in the chopper firing the mini gun through the window at the agents. In one particular shot note the metal chair pulled out from the desk which falls over after being shot at, then a few shots later is suddenly back upright again. (01:43:30)

The-Immortal

Continuity mistake: After filling a room full of holes with the machine gun from the helicopter, the Agents abandon their current bodies and take control of ones that were standing outside the door to the room Morpheus was held in. Where were these guys the whole time the gunfire was happening in the next room? The Agents were standing in relaxed positions as soon as they took control. Wake up guys. (01:44:10)

Continuity mistake: Throughout the "lobby scene" the walls and pillars of the lobby are shown being torn apart by bullets. At the end of the scene, Neo and Trinity proceed into the elevator and the overall damage is apparent. They set the bomb, get out of the elevator and the bomb and elevator drop. When the explosion is exiting the elevator shaft, the lobby is spotless... no SWAT men, no guns, and perfect pillars and walls, not a bullet hole in sight. It could be said that the dead guards are on the sides of the room, invisible from the camera's angle... but what about the last guy Neo kills right in front of the elevator? (01:44:10 - 01:45:30)

Continuity mistake: Neo and Trinity kill all those soldiers on the roof before the agent comes to fight them. The agent shoots at Neo and during the whole dodging bullets scene every single corpse is gone. More to the point, Trinity's disappeared too! (01:45:36)

Continuity mistake: When on the roof, Neo fires at the enemy agent, who dodges all his bullets, but the windows of the building behind him are undamaged. (01:45:36)

Continuity mistake: When Neo has just jumped from the helicopter, he is left standing with the safety rope next to his right foot. He then slings it round his right arm, and he's looking at the rope on the floor, which has moved next to his left foot. (01:46:05)

Continuity mistake: When Trinity and Neo have rescued Morpheus and are flying through the air, Neo drops Morpheus then Neo lands, but Neo is halfway on the rooftop, yet when he grabs hold of the rope and is dragged along the rooftop, he is sliding almost the entire length of the rooftop. (01:46:05)

The-Immortal

Continuity mistake: When Neo unloads two 9mm Berettas at an agent who dodges all the shots, right after he runs out of ammo, the camera is facing Neo dead on and the recoil slides on the pistols are closed. The next shot where he drops them and says, "Trinity... help." the slides are locked back with the ejection port open. (01:46:20)

Continuity mistake: During the rooftop scene check out the tiling situation. When Neo takes two bullets, he falls to the ground. He lies mainly inside one tile, even the left gun fits in. (And it's on a vertical line) His top hand lies just on the line. Now, watch again when the agent is dead. All of the sudden he's in-between two tiles, and the gun is now on a horizontal line, but not a vertical. (01:46:36)

The Matrix mistake picture

Continuity mistake: After the helicopter smashes into the building and Neo saves Trinity, they look at each other and you can see smoke from the building. After that, Morpheus is talking to Neo. You can see several shots of him and Neo talking and behind them, the building and its windows are still intact. (01:46:50)

Continuity mistake: When Neo is in the helicopter, shooting the gatling gun into the room where Morpheus is being held, there is a shot from inside the helicopter where you can see the room is empty for a full second. This happens again a few seconds later. (01:48:00)

Continuity mistake: When Neo kills all the agents with the minigun and Morpheus releases himself from the handcuffs, as Smith shoots Morpheus through the wall, a close-up shows him almost dry when in the previous shot he was completely wet. (01:49:25)

Continuity mistake: At the subway station Smith shoots at Trinity. He destroys the phone receiver and the top half goes flying. But when Neo looks at it, it's hanging down with the top half still attached. (01:49:25)

Continuity mistake: As Neo catches Morpheus jumping from the shot out window, Neo holds on to him by his wrist covered by his shirt cuff. In subsequent shots, Neo is shown holding Morpheus' bare wrist, his cuff near his elbow. (01:49:42)

Continuity mistake: In the subway shootout with Neo and Smith, when both are firing face to face, their automatic pistols are firing but the actions are not working. (01:50:05)

Continuity mistake: When Neo is fighting the agent in the subway, he wipes his blood on the back of his hand, but when he puts his fists up the blood is gone. (01:51:45)

Continuity mistake: When Agent Smith has Neo in a headlock on the train tracks in the station there is blood coming out of Neo's mouth and going down his chin. In the next shot the blood is almost completely gone apart for a little bit on his lips and a spot of it on his chin. (01:53:10)

Continuity mistake: Near the end, after Neo steals the cell phone, as he's running away, you first see the cell phone owner from the front, waving his right arm and shouting. The next camera angle shows the owner from behind waving his right arm, but he has obviously already been inhabited by the agent (the suit colour's the giveaway). The next cut has the "Agent inhabiting body" sound effect, and he turns around to begin chasing Neo. (01:54:20)

Continuity mistake: When Neo steals the guy's mobile phone there is a shot looking back at the man (agent Smith) waving his arm . On the pavement there a few people going both ways. When the close up of Smith happens there are loads of people going left to right and more people on the right side of the screen. (01:54:28)

The Matrix mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Agent Smith is interrogating Neo, after Smith has sealed Neo's mouth shut and he is backed into the corner, when the camera cuts back to Smith you can clearly see a reflection in his glasses of Neo still sitting down in the chair. (00:19:50)

Agent Smith: I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species, and I realised that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment; but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer on this planet, you are a plague, and we...are the cure. Trivia: In the entire film, there are only two "homegrown", real humans - Tank and Dozer. They both have names of machines.

Question: I get that people in the matrix, who have not been freed, are not ready to be freed, and I know at one point when Morpheus is explaining the matrix to Neo (I believe during the woman in the red dress test) he says something along the lines of: The matrix is a system, that system is our enemy. The matrix is filled with minds we are trying to save, but until we do they are still part of that system and that makes them our enemies. Many of them are so dependent on that system they will fight to defend it.- I am paraphrasing, but it is something like that. As I'm sure everyone knows he also says "The body cannot live without the mind." And therefore if you die in the matrix you die in the 'real' world. My question is, do they ever address the ethical questions that could arise from the fact that they kill mind after mind of police officers, SWAT teams, security guards, innocent humans just doing their jobs? I understand that sometimes it may be necessary, and that Neo doesn't have much choice but to fight agents and kill their hosts at times. But things like Mouse, knowing he is going to die so he grabs machine guns and takes out as many people as he can. Or when Neo and Trinity, on their way to save Morpheus, cover them selves in guns and take out that whole building of guards and pretty much end up with one gun each. The guards were completely prepared to let them enter the building freely if they passed the metal detector, could they not have went empty handed and just taken out two guards later, and used their weapons? It just seems like a pretty bad way to go about a mission to save people. Unless perhaps I missed a speech about sacrificing some minds for the cause or the needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few type deal. Just wondering if that is ever addressed.

Chosen answer: No, they don't address it, other than Morpheus' speech during the test. It's not something that they have any realistic choice about, so they just have to accept it and do what they need to do. Mouse, yes, he chooses to defend himself when cornered, but who wouldn't? These may be innocent victims of the Matrix he's shooting at, but they're still there to kill him - he's hardly going to stand there and accept his fate meekly. There's also no indication that the guards were "completely prepared" to let Neo and Trinity into what's clearly a high security building, undoubtedly they would have been asked for identification, what their purpose was there and so forth and turned away if, as seems likely, their answers weren't satisfactory. Shooting their way in from the start is likely their only option. Yes, it's absolutely ethically unfortunate, but if they're going to resist the machines successfully, it's not something they have any choice about. A necessary evil.
