Gran Torino

Question: Would a Korean war veteran be allowed to keep his Garand rifle? I assume that the film wants to depict the rifle and the Colt pistol as being the very ones he had in Korea. Wouldn't that be like a lot of guys stowing M16s in their old footlockers?

Chosen answer: Well, a lot of veterans actually buy their weapons once they have retired, since they have the constitutional right to keep and bear those weapons. However, I don't think it is said in the movie that those arms were exactly the ones Kowalsky used during the war.
