A young boy on a bicycle veers in front of the oncoming bus, so Harold pulls him out of the way, only to be hit by the bus.Karen sits at her typewriter, beating her desk and crying, with the sentence in front of her reading "Harold Crick is de". Upset with her decision, she writes a draft where Harold lives and shows it to Jules, who thinks it's "okay", but would rather have the ending where Harold dies.Harold wakes up in a body cast, and the doctor explains that a shard of metal from his wristwatch blocked an artery that would have caused him to bleed to death, so his wristwatch, in fact, became the character that died for a greater good; to save Harold from a stale and empty life.
