Factual error: German officers would not be present for the search of explosives and would certainly not take part in disarming them. Procedure would certainly have explosives experts do this while officers commanded the battle.

Fireball

Continuity mistake: When David Niven is at the bottom of the hoist setting the explosive charge, his hands are covered in grease as he is hiding the wires, which would complete an electrical circuit. Seconds later, when he and Gregory Peck are moving toward the guns his hands are perfectly clean. There was no time to wash his hands - or any evidence of a sink - when the Germans were feverishly trying to get into the tunnel.

Audio problem: When the Germans are banging on the bunker door with sledgehammers the clanking sound always happens when the hammers are not hitting the door.

Fireball

Plot hole: When we see the two disguised commandos driving through the fortress there's a Soviet driving in the convoy. You can tell because the sides of the turret are curved down. This shouldn't be there as the Soviets never fought in Greece.

Fireball

Audio problem: Right before the escape from the fortress, Miller throws his gun from the cliff into the water with the 'splash' sound following rather quickly afterwards. When they climb down the rope and jump in, it takes a lot longer for them to splash into the water.

Jacob La Cour

Factual error: During the train ride scene, the train is being pulled by a modern Yugoslav railways electric locomotive, despite that it was manufactured postwar and that there were no electrified rail lines in 1940s Yugoslavia.

Other mistake: Close to the ending you see that the guns are located in the mountain are on the port side of the ships coming in. During the end scene, notice that the burning hole is on the starboard side of the ships.

Continuity mistake: When the commandos break through the roadblock, Anthony Quinn shoots at the German sentries guarding it. The German sentry on the right falls into the sandbags twice after being shot.

Scott215

Continuity mistake: When they are being interrogated by the gestapo officer, immediately after Anthony Quinn turns the tables on the Germans, Gregory Peck is seen behind him magically holding an MP40 on the seated German officer. The scene then shows Peck picking up the MP40 and threatening the officer again.

Plot hole: When the Germans are drilling through the doors with jackhammers the drills are not touching the door and are just being held near the sides of the breach.

Fireball

Revealing mistake: When, during the final battle in the town, a German truck explodes from a grenade, it explodes from the inside of the bed. This isn't possible because the truck is covered by tarp and we can't see any way the grenade could get into the bed.

Fireball

Continuity mistake: When the Germans are cutting through the bunker door at the mountain complex, the interior shot shows them having cut a hole of at least 2 feet in diameter, but when the guard on the outside shoots through the hole in the door, it is only about 12 inches by 4 inches, no way they could have cut the interior door through that small slit.

Factual error: During the last stand-off between Spyros and the German officer, the latter is wielding a Sten gun. Even though the Germans did capture many Stens, they were just put in storage (until after Stalingrad) since they were deemed "too primitive." So no way for that officer to get his hands on a Sten, and why would he use it in preference to a brand-new, shiny MP 40 anyway?

Continuity mistake: When Col. Stavros rips open the back of Anna's blouse to reveal whether there are scars, the closeup shows Stavro's German uniform with ribbons on his left chest. When the camera cuts to the next frame, the ribbons have vanished.

Continuity mistake: After escaping from the Germans, when they left Franklin in their care, they are driving in a truck. Looking at them, L to R, Stavros, Mallory and Brown, driving. A few seconds later, Maria is driving and Brown not seen, probably in the back. Later, when they take over the armored car, after killing the Germans and pushing their own truck over the cliff, they drive off in the same direction that they just came from.

Factual error: Captain Sessler, the SS officer who questions the commando team, has no SS sleeve eagle on his tunic. Also, the eagle on his cap is the Heer (regular army) style rather than the regulation SS style.

Continuity mistake: On the way to destroy the guns the truck hits a tank, and the wheel is bent. A shot later the truck is rolling on with no problems.

Factual error: In the German office, after overpowering their captors, Mallory gives a pack of cigarettes to the wounded Major. The pack contains filtered cigarettes, which were not readily available. The only commercially made cigarettes at that time were available in Yugoslavia. England had filtered cigarettes with an attached tip that were special order. The Yugoslavian filters were made of crepe paper and not the cellulose ones on the cigarettes in the movie.

Squadron Leader Howard Barnsby raaf: First, you've got that bloody old fortress on top of that bloody cliff. Then you've got the bloody cliff overhang. You can't even see the bloody cave, let alone the bloody guns. And anyway, we haven't got a bloody bomb big enough to smash that bloody rock. And that's the bloody truth, sir.

Trivia: Anthony Quinn was so taken with Rhodes, the location for the movie, that he decided to buy some land there. Particularly a bay formerly known as Vagies Bay, which is still called Anthony Quinn Bay.
