Balian's wife committed suicide because their son had died. Godfrey, a well-known knight crusader, has been searching for his lost illegitimate son, Balian. Godfrey offers Balian an opportunity to leave France and travel to Jerusalem. Balian agrees, hoping to save the soul of his dead wife. Soon knighted, he becomes the hope for a dying knight and king.
