The Girl Next Door (2004)
Plot summary
Directed by: Luke Greenfield
Starring: Timothy Olyphant, Emile Hirsch, James Remar, Elisha Cuthbert, Nicholas Downs
An ambitious high school senior, Matthew (Hirsch), with dreams of a career in politics is overjoyed to discover that his new neighbor, 19-year-old Danielle (Cuthbert), is absolutely beautiful, and they fall in love quickly, head over heels. Their relationship is put to the test, however when he discovers (along with the rest of the town, eventually) that she used to be a... porn star (Olyphant plays her ex-boyfriend; Remar plays a skin flick producer she used to work for).
Trivia: The producers had asked porn star Jenna Jameson to appear in the movie, and she agreed. However, she wanted a larger role, that of Danielle, played by Elisha Cuthbert. The producers declined, and Jenna lost the role she was offered. (source: Elisha Cuthbert, speaking on "Lovelines" radio program.).
Question: What was the point of the police officer being in a crash at the beginning of the film. I didn't really see the point of it as it didn't play any part in the storyline.

Answer: While it doesn't have anything to do with the overall plot, the crash shows just how much Matthew is afraid to do the wrong thing and perhaps how he overthinks things. As we know all he would be doing is missing a bit of school by getting in his car and driving from the school. The fact that Matthew is able to imagine an horrific crash of a security guard because of just skipping school shows how worried he is about doing the wrong thing.
