Suggested correction: He may have just got on without paying and not have been noticed by the conductor. That does happen, which is why conductors go through the Amtrak demanding to see tickets while the train is going. I'm sure the conductor would have noticed by the time they did their rounds, but Tom got on the train before that happened.
