Since this is summer vacation very likely Ruby or Angela (her friend) were staying over so they don't need to get up to go to school. And since there are breaks, including commercials, they can use the breaks to go grab some food or to go to the bathroom.
Correction: In this movie that's ok because it was mentioned in this movie that the squirrel was just part of the whole fake set-up. So since it was supposed to be fake the string is not a mistake.
