Continuity mistake: When McLeach discovers Cody in the hole, McLeach reaches in with his shotgun to help Cody out. It would have to be a very large gun to reach into the bottom of the hole, yet when Cody is pulled out, the gun is shown to be quite small.
McLeach: Breaker, breaker, little mate. I forgot to tell ya... around here you have to be quiet! Or the rangers might hear ya. Now sit down, relax, enjoy the view. Nothing but abandoned opal mines far as the eye can see. And dead ahead is home sweet home.
Answer: Cody most likely told the authorities and had them freed.
