Continuity mistake: In the scene where the murderer is hacking down the front door with an axe, the door and its hinges change. In one shot the hinges are on the left (as we see it) and the door closes. The murderer then manages to hack through the door and the door swings open with hinges on both sides, opening like a swinging door from a western movie.

The killer is the English teacher, getting revenge on the town because his mother was raped there (by Michael Biehn and his friends). Everybody thinks the killer is female because the teacher dressed up as his mother to commit the murders. Michael Biehn is axed but Brittany Murphy lives. Brittany Murphy for whatever reason decides protect her criminal father Michael Biehn. After that she sees Loralee standing from afar before disappearing. At the very end, you see a nearby waterfall begin to run red...as a play on the title.

Answer: The police knew. Deputy Mina, who was sitting across from Jody and her mom in the interrogation room, smiled knowingly. They just didn't tell the feds to keep Jody's dad's name out of it. He was, after all, Leonard's biological father and the Markens didn't want the FBI to know. Or at least that's my take on it.
